Solid Waste Handling in Delhi vs Rest of India
Garbage mounds are a common sight nowadays!
Waste is everywhere, in the form of rotting mounds that litter our environment, damage our rivers, and contaminate our wells and lakes.
Solid waste management (SWM) has emerged as one of the India's most significant development challenges. The country is confronting a significant waste management crisis as a result of rising urbanization.
See the numbers – it is huge!
Over 377 million people live in 7,935 cities, producing 62 million tonnes of municipal solid trash each year. Only 43 million tonnes of garbage are collected, 11.9 million tonnes are handled, and 31 million tonnes are thrown in landfills.
The garbage problem in Delhi is not a new one. The city generates more than 9,500 tonnes of waste per day (TPD).
Solid Waste Management (SWM) is one of the most important services given by municipal governments in the country in order to maintain metropolitan areas clean. SWM is also one of the most expensive municipal services that a local government must offer as part of its mandatory municipal responsibility, accounting for around 1% of GNP in urban areas.Almost all municipal authorities, on the other hand, indiscriminately discharge solid trash to a dumpyard within or outside the city.
What is a solid waste?
Solid waste refers to undesirable or unusable solid materials produced by human activities in residential, industrial, or commercial settings.
Different Types of Solid Waste
Depending on the source, it can be divided into ?several categories:
MSW (Municipal Solid Waste): Household garbage, construction and demolition debris (CND), sanitation residue, and rubbish from streets, all of which are mostly created by residential and business complexes, make up this category.
ISW (Industrial Solid Waste): It is hazardous waste that contains harmful elements and is caustic, extremely combustible, or reacts when exposed to specific things, such as gases.
Biomedical waste: Often known as hospital waste. It is a type of trash that is generated in hospitals. It is usually infectious waste, such as disposable syringes, swabs, bandages, body fluids, human excreta, and so on. If not addressed, these can pose a major hazard to human health.
How is solid waste handled in Delhi and Rest of India?
Out of the 9,500 tonnes of waste generated per day in Delhi, approximately 8,000 TPD of trash is collected and transferred to Bhalswa, Okhla, and Ghazipur dump sites. Because the informal sector manages the majority of the rubbish, actual waste creation in the city might be significantly greater.
The city of Delhi needs hybrid solutions!
We require waste to energy conversion. The separated wet waste has a great potential for composting or generating biogas, with over 50% biodegradable waste. And none of this will work unless we separate at the root. With hundreds of millions of rupees spent on collection and transportation, it's time to look out of the box.
We may learn from other neighbors and cities that are undertaking excellent garbage management work. The lieutenant governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT) notified the “Solid Waste Management Bye-Laws 2018” on January 15, 2018. The bye-laws were drafted under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, rather than the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, for the first time.
The ideas of "sustainable development," "precaution," and "polluter pays" guide waste management in India!
These principles require towns and businesses to operate in an ecologically responsible and accountable way, restoring equilibrium whenever their actions disturb it.The key to effective waste management is to guarantee correct waste segregation at the source and that the garbage passes through various recycling and resource recovery streams. The remaining residue is then carefully disposed in sanitary landfills. Sanitary landfills are the last destination for unusable municipal solid waste from waste processing plants, as well as other inorganic trash that cannot be reused or repurposed.
