What is the Importance of increasing River Water Quality in India?
The quality of India's rivers, lakes, and ponds is being threatened by population growth, urbanization, and industry. Water quality deteriorates every time it is used. Unfortunately, the country's reverence for its rivers does not guarantee their cleanliness. As a result, it becomes important to increase the river water quality in India, to lessen the negative environmental effects.
Water pollution in rivers
A river is described as a significant natural watercourse that empties into an ocean, lake, or other body of water. Typically, tributaries that converge along the river's path feed it. Water that accumulates in upland areas is drained by rivers and streams.
Although, contaminants are diluted and broken down more quickly in moving water than in still water, many rivers and streams around the world are seriously contaminated. This is mostly due to the concentration of the three major sources of pollution—industry, agriculture, and domestic.
Pollution Source
1: To help their crops grow more quickly, farmers spray pesticides and fertilizers on their crops. However, rain can wash these pesticides and fertilizers through the soil and into waterways. The concentration of nitrate and phosphate in the water significantly rises, when huge amounts of fertilizers or farm waste drain into a river. These elements help algae grow and multiply quickly, turning the water green in the process.
Eutrophication, the term for this enormous development of algae, causes pollution. When the algae die, the bacteria break them down by quickly multiplying, and consuming all the oxygen in the water, which causes the death of numerous creatures.
2: Occasionally, chemical waste from industrial processes is unintentionally dumped into waterways. These contaminants include cyanide, mercury, zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, and others. When these compounds enter the water, their concentrations can be so high that, they instantly kill fish and other aquatic life. Pollutants can sometimes find their way into a food chain, where they can build up to dangerous levels and eventually kill mammals, fish, and birds.
3: River water is used in factories to cool down or power equipment. Chemically-laden dirty water is reintroduced to the river. Cooling water is warmer than the river itself. Lowering the amount of dissolved oxygen and upsetting the balance of life in the water, are two effects of raising water temperature.
Ways which contribute to river water pollution
According to the River Survey, Indians from all across the nation stroll down to the local stream or canal, to obtain drinking water, wash their clothes, clean up, or simply swim and enjoy. India's waterways, which have continually been granted a place of holiness in the way of life, have become polluted, similar to other streams far and wide.
However, this is not an unavoidable problem. It usually receives attention quickly and with currently available developments. Tough legislation and the necessary confidence to implement them are needed, for the improvement of river quality. The waterways can clean themselves in one flood season, if we stop contaminating them, so we don't need to keep cleaning them.
Ways to contribute to improve river quality: Importance of increasing river water quality in India
· Treating modern and mixture waste
According to the River & Hydrographic Surveys, point sources of contamination are frequently industrial chemical and mechanical waste, or domestic sewage from towns and cities. In cities and towns, sewage should be metered, just like electricity, water, and gas, with households and businesses paying according to the metre.
· Getting rid of horticultural pollution
In our streams, contamination might come from "point sources", which enters the waterway in large quantities from a few locations, or "non-point sources" like agricultural spill over, which can enter the stream from a large number of locations throughout its path.
· Proper arrangements
We need to implement River Quality Improvement on a national level. Such an effort cannot be successfully carried out with just one person's enthusiasm.
