difference between sanitary sewage and storm sewage, storm sewer and sanitary sewer separation, what is a sanitary sewer

Is there any difference between storm water sewers and sanitary sewers?

We're all thinking "All of them are pipes! What's the difference between the two?"One drain is like another, and the sewer resembles the sewer.

Isn't everything that goes down the drain sent to a wastewater treatment plant?

WRONG!

It's necessary to know the difference between sanitary and storm sewers so that we may avoid unnecessary environmental harm and assist in meeting its wastewater permit requirements.

What are sanitary sewers?

Wastewater is transported from houses and businesses to wastewater treatment plants via sanitary sewers. They are made up of pipes, manholes, and pumping stations, and their goal is to protect public health by preserving water quality. A sanitary sewer's primary function is to transport waste from residential houses and business establishments to wastewater treatment plants. These systems were created with human waste and easily degradable manufactured solids in mind.

How do they function?

Wastewater is transported away from your house (or company) through relatively small plumbing pipes to the sewer main in the street or to your septic system when you flush the toilet or wash dishes in the kitchen sink. Only toilet paper and human waste are allowed to travel through the pipes that carry garbage from your home (or business) to the sewer main. It then travels until it reaches a wastewater treatment facility, where it is treated to eliminate contaminants before being released back into the environment safely. When non-biodegradable products, such as sanitary wipes, are flushed, they obstruct the public wastewater system (perhaps creating blockages and overflows) and plant processes.

The wastewater is usually carried away by the help of gravity in sanitary sewers.

Sanitary sewers are more than just a collection of pipes. Pump stations, force mains, manholes, storage facilities, and other components make up the whole conveyance system.Pumps are occasionally employed in low-lying locations when wastewater has to be transported to a higher height.

Manholes are used to access sanitary sewers for routine maintenance and repair works. Clean-outs on your property allows to inspect the section of the sanitary sewer that connects your home to the sewer main in the street. The clean-out can be used to access this pipe if it is blocked.

Are Storm Water Sewers and Sanitary Sewers the same?

The storm sewer is a drainage system that is used to transport rainwater and other drainage but not sewage. Combined sewers, which convey both rainwater and wastewater to a centralized treatment facility, are not sanitary sewers. The environment is harmed when chemicals or dangerous substances are disposed of in the storm sewage system.

Motor oil, cleansers, paints, and other ordinary home materials that end up in storm drains can harm fish, birds, and other species, as well as contaminate drinking water. Grass clippings, leaves, litter, and organic matter can also clog storm drains, resulting in flooding.

How storm sewers function?

The runoff is channeled through subsurface pipelines or open ditches before being discharged (untreated) into streams or other bodies of surface water. Curbs and low-lying outdoor spaces serve as inlets for this system. Basement floor drains that link to the storm drainage system are seen in certain older structures.
