wastewater to drinking water process, can drinking toilet water kill you, would you drink recycled water

Overview

For years, people have treated wastewater and used it for agricultural and industrial purposes. However, a new development is the recycling of wastewater for the purpose of drinking water. Yes, for drinking water!

Can you clean the wastewater?

So the million dollar question-Is it possible to purify wastewater to the extent of making it potable? The answer is yes, it is perfectly possible to purify wastewater.

However, the degree of purification is different. For example, wastewater can be used in irrigation and agricultural purposes. It can then be further refined for drinking.

The first degree is to convert wastewater into treated water. It's not really that complicated. Wastewater goes through various distillation processes. The result is clean water that is no longer brown. But at this point, the water is not clean. Therefore, it can only be applied for agricultural and industrial purposes.

The next level converts treated water to reclaimed water. At this stage, the treated water undergoes additional treatment to make it safe for drinking.

In fact, people believe that treated water from wastewater is usually cleaner than the drinking water currently available. Now that we understand how this is done, there are three stages of the purification process here.

Stage 1: Pre-processing

Treatment at this stage involves the removal of solid particles from the wastewater. At this stage, the focus is on removing large particles from the solution.

Stage 2: Second-line treatment

At this stage, treatment becomes more demanding and more important. This phase focuses on removing all organic waste from wastewater. Bacteria are usually the main tool at this stage, as they consume sludge in wastewater.

At the end of this phase, wastewater is usually free of pollutants and waste. For treated water, purification usually ends at this stage.

Stage 3: Tertiary treatment (wastewater treatment)

At this stage, the water is pretty clean. Nevertheless, there are some trace pollutants in the water. And these pollutants are generally toxic and dangerous.

Therefore, this phase helps to remove these trace substances from water. And this is achieved by UV-based treatment or RO purificationand clinical treatment. There is also a sand filtration system that cleans the water at this stage. After this stage, the water is completely clean and ready to drink.

What happens if you drink wastewater?

In fact, no one needs to tell you not to drink wastewater. Who deliberately drinks faeces? But I know it's an absolutely off-limits area, so here's an explanation of health risks.

Sewage generally makes you very ill. The reason is very simple. Wastewater usually contains a variety of organisms that are dangerous to the body. If you take them now, you are exposing yourself to these organisms that can affect your health and well-being.

Here are some common health problems related to sewage, in case you are wondering exactly why you are at risk.

1. Gastroenteritis

It causes a variety of illnesses such as fever, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and even headaches.

2. Hepatitis

This includes liver failure. Typical symptoms of this illness are fever, jaundice, and skin discoloration, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and nausea.

3. Dysentery

It also affects the stomach and causes a variety of illnesses such as fever, gastric spasm and bloody diarrhoea.

4. Typhoid

It is a bacterial infection that causes several illnesses such as high fever, cough, headache, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.

5. Salmonellosis

At this time, Salmonella enters the body and causes various illnesses such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever.

6. Giardiasis

This usually occurs when sewage intake contains giardia parasites. And it leads to various conditions such as stomach cramps, upset stomach, diarrhoea and watery stools.

However, when treating wastewater, you need to be aware that these risks do not exist. Therefore, in situations where wastewater has passed through the purification system, and it is believed to be drinkable. That way, you can drink without fear of the above health hazards.

Other uses of treated wastewater

How can wastewater be reused? There are several uses for using recycled wastewater. These multiple uses fall into six categories:

1. Use in the city

One of the most common ways to reuse wastewater is for urban purposes. This includes use in the following situations:

· Irrigation in various  parks

· Irrigation of private garden

· Irrigation of sports facilities

· Application to fire protection

· Washing public toilets with water

· Dustproof

· Car wash

2. Agricultural use

Another way to reuse wastewater is to use it for agricultural purposes. This includes use in the following situations:

·  Irrigation of processed food crops

·  Hydroponics

·  Aquaculture

In general, this application is also preferred. This is because water can be supplied at a lower cost than other procurement methods. Its composition is also very useful as a fertilizer.

3. Industrial application

People also reuse wastewater by using it for industrial purposes. This includes the following uses:

· Cooling water

· Water treatment

· Washing water

· Soil compaction

· Making concrete

· Circulation cooling system and tower

4. Use for entertainment purposes

It also has the main use of recycled wastewater for recreational purposes. This includes the following uses:

· Golf Course Irrigation

· Artificial snow production

· Other private aesthetic reservoirs

· Many private recreational reservoirs such as fishing, boating and bathing

5. Environmental use

In addition, recycled wastewater is continuously used to protect the environment. This includes the following uses:

·  Aquifer Charges

·  Swamp

·  Wetlands

·  Wildlife Habitat

·  Stream extension

·  Forestation

Usually, the idea is to use these recycled waters to strengthen and protect these various bodies of water.

6. Use for drinking

There are also major uses for recycled waste water for drinking water purposes. This relates to the following uses:

· Drinking water

· Expansion of drinking water supply

However, this wastewater must have undergone a very reliable purification process. There is also a testing and monitoring system to ensure that the water is safe to drink.

However, apart from these usages, there are some examples of de facto usage.

Wondering what it is?

Well, it happens where people aren't planning to use recycled wastewater. In such cases, it happens randomly.

For example, a sewage treatment plant discharging water into a river. And this river is used as a source of drinking water in another community. In such cases, we were actually using wastewater.

Conclusion

In case you are wondering if you can clean the wastewater. The answer is yes!

Various treatment systems are available that can use wastewater as drinking water. In fact, there are some states where freshwater comes from sewage. Therefore, untreated sewage should be avoided, but once treated it is safe to drink.
