Reverse Osmosis is the reverse process of Osmosis. Whereas osmosis occurs naturally without the need for energy, to reverse the process, energy must be applied to the more saline solution. A reverse osmosis membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows water molecules to pass through but not most dissolved salts, organics, bacteria, or pyrogens. However, in order to desalinate (demineralize or deionize) water, you must 'push' the water through the reverse osmosis membrane by applying pressure greater than the naturally occurring osmotic pressure. This allows pure water through while retaining the majority of contaminants.
