Reverse Osmosis vs Ultrafiltration: Which Filtration Method to opt
Filtration is the process of removing particulates from water by forcing it through a porous medium. This porous media could be natural, like sand, gravel, or clay, or it could be a membrane wall made of a variety of materials. The process of settling large particles prior to filtration is known as sedimentation.
WHAT IS ULTRAFILTRATION?
An ultrafiltration filter's pore size is approximately 0.01 micron. Because the pore size of a microfiltration filter is approximately 0.1 micron, many bacteria are eliminated during microfiltration, but viruses remain in the water. Ultrafiltration would eliminate these larger particles, as well as some viruses. Neither microfiltration nor ultrafiltration can remove dissolved compounds unless they are first adsorbed (with activated carbon) or clotted (with alum or iron salts).
WHAT IS REVERSE OSMOSIS?
The pore size of Reverse Osmosis filters is roughly 0.0001 micron. Water is practically pure after flowing through a RO filter. Reverse Osmosis not only cleanses all organic molecules and viruses, but it also removes the majority of minerals in the water.

1) |
It converts 4/5 gallons into waste water. |
It doesn't produce any waste. In fact, it can be used to make potable wastewater. |
2) |
It requires a storage tank as it has slow filter speeds. |
It does not require a storage tank as it filters one gallon of water per minute. |
3) |
RO needs a minimum 50 psi to function properly. |
UF can operate smoothly under low pressure. |

Why is reverse osmosis a better option?
Many people want their drinking water to be as independent of minerals, salts, and total dissolved solids as possible, so they prefer Reverse Osmosis over Ultrafiltration. This is because Reverse Osmosis removes the majority of dissolved minerals in water, whereas Ultrafiltration removes only solid particle matter at a microscopic level, and dissolved solids and salts are not removed by Ultrafiltration.
Ultrafiltration is a filter system in which a hollow fiber membrane is used to filter out solid waste and tiny pollutants from water, that it can filter water to a fineness of 0.025 micron., whereas reverse osmosis is a molecular separation method in which a semi-permeable membrane separates 95-98 percent of inorganic dissolved material from the water molecule in the reverse osmosis system.
Reverse osmosis converts around four gallons of water into wastewater for every gallon purified. A permeate pump, which may be added on a RO system to minimize wastewater and enhance efficiency, can help with this. On the other hand, Ultrafiltration does not create effluent. It can be used to make wastewater potable. It can also work with low water pressure.
Reverse osmosis is used for cross-flow filtering. The mechanism generates two water streams through the membrane. Water is produced so slowly by Reverse Osmosis that it must be stored before it can be used. The tank takes up space beneath the counter. The RO storage tank, as well as the slow filtration rate, may be a disadvantage for many people.
And, in the case of Ultrafiltration, there is no need for a storage tank. It is physically linked to a specific spot.
