Instrumentation and control systems in WWTP
Waste-water treatment operations are characterized by on-going disturbances and changes, which are impossible to detect manually during the precise time period, needed to sustain the facility's proper operation.
Common process inputs and conditions include variable flow rates, chemical and biological content, temperature, and density. As a result, there are various instrumentation and control systems in WWTPs. Let’s have a look at them.
Continuous monitoring in WWTPs
Instrumentation and automatic controls make it feasible to continuously monitor process variables, quickly communicate data to the operations manager, and immediately execute corrective actions, when necessary.
Due to the many benefits they offer in terms of process optimization, equipment performance, and worker convenience, the use of instrumentation and automatic control is increasing these days.
Measuring Devices in WWTPs
Measurement devices, or sensors, are tools that detect, quantify, or compute process variables. Three categories have been established for these variables:
1. Physical parameters - flow, pressure, level, temperature,
2. Chemical parameters-pH, oxidation-reduction potential, turbidity, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, residual chlorine, etc.), and
3. Natural -oxygen consumption rate, TOC reduction rate, sludge growthrate, etc.).
Sensor Devices
Sensors can measure variables directly, indirectly, or inferentially. Additionally, measurements can be made regularly or irregularly, online or offline.
Devices that Transmit Signals
A device that transmits a process variable signal from a sensor to a readout or controller, is known as a signal-transmitting device. The signal may be transmitted electronically via voltage and current, pulse duration, or tone, pneumatically via a detector or amplifier, or mechanically via indication, float, or cable movement.
In voltage and current transmission, signals are transferred via milliamp direct current, or voltage signals. The duration of the voltage delivery in time-pulse transmission or pulse duration, is inversely proportional to the measured data.
Data Readout Display
The transmitted operation is presented by readout devices in a way that the operator may understand. The most common readout devices on panels or computer screens are indicators, recorders, and totalizers. The data display could be local, close to the machinery, or in the facility's main control room.
Different types of Control Systems
In waste-water engineering, three different time control systems are employed:
1. Electronic control;
2. Analogue signals for control;
3. Independent operation.
Digital control systems have two settings:
1. on and off, and
2. open and closed.
The transmitted signal, which originates from a position, limit, float, or pressure switch, signals a status change.
Conversely, data is sent by analogue control systems in the form of a set of values that represent flow rate, concentration, and level. It is possible to send analogue data in its original format, convert it to digital format, or use both formats simultaneously.
Analogue measurements are used as the input for continuous control, and the output is the manipulation of a final control element. Control elements include control systems or controllers, feedback and feed forward control loops, and more. The devices automatically regulates the control variable.
