What are the Sustainable solutions with WWT and recycling?
In today's world, water scarcity and pollution are critical challenges.
Expanding water and wastewater reuse is one method of mitigating the effects of water scarcity and pollution. The world's rising scarcity of water, along with significant population growth in metropolitan areas, raises concerns about suitable water management strategies.
In this environment, there is a growing awareness of the dangers of sewage pollution on rivers and lakes. As a result, the World Bank and national regulatory authorities are paying closer attention to wastewater treatment.
Wastewater Treatment and Reuse in a Sustainable Manner
The uncontrolled disposal of urban, industrial, and agricultural liquid, solid, and gaseous wastes into the environment is one of the most serious dangers to human civilization's sustainability, contaminating water, land, and air and contributing to global warming. With rising population and economic growth, wastewater treatment and disposal are critical to protecting public health and reducing unacceptable levels of environmental degradation.
Furthermore, effective wastewater management is necessary to prevent contamination of water bodies in order to preserve supplies of clean water. In industrialized countries, effective wastewater management is well established, while in poor countries, it is still restricted. Many people in most poor countries lack access to water and sanitation services. The collection and transportation of wastewater out of urban neighbourhoods is not yet a service available to the entire population, and only a tiny part of the collected wastewater receives proper treatment. Raw wastewater is commonly seen flowing through the streets of slums and peri-urban areas around the world. In impoverished countries, the main cause of sickness is a lack of clean water and sanitation.
Sustainable Treatment Types
a) Lagoons/wetlands,
b) UASB (anaerobic digesters), as well as
c) SAT technology.
1: Wetland and lagoon treatment: In wetland treatment, natural forces (chemical, physical, and solar) work together to purify wastewater, resulting in wastewater treatment. A series of shallow ponds serve as stabilization lagoons, with water hyacinth or duckweed acting as heavy metal accumulators. A variety of bacteria, plankton, and algae work together to further filter the water. Wetland treatment technology in underdeveloped nations has a competitive advantage over conventional, automated treatment systems because it provides a higher level of self-sufficiency, ecological balance, and economic sustainability. The system enables complete resource recovery.
If sufficient non-arable land is available, lagoon systems may be considered a low-cost technique. However, in most large cities, the requirement for available land is not met. Flat property is in high demand due to rising urban development and agricultural interests. The utilization of wetlands must take into account the climate.
2: Anaerobic Digestion: If there is limited access to land, another treatment option is anaerobic digestion. In the absence of oxygen, anaerobic bacteria breakdown organic molecules, producing methane and carbon dioxide. Methane can be recycled and used as an alternative energy source (biogas). Other advantages include a 50-80% reduction in total bio-solids volume and a biologically stable final waste sludge that can serve as rich compost for agriculture.
3: Soil Aquifer Treatment: SAT (soil aquifer treatment) is a geo-purification method in which partially cleansed sewage effluent is artificially recharged and then extracted for future use. The wastewater is purified further before being blended with natural groundwater via recharging through unsaturated soil layers. In water-stressed locations, treated wastewater can be a significant resource for enhanced groundwater supplies. SAT systems are economical, effective at pathogen removal, and simple to use.
