What are MBBR media in STP, and how it helps to reduce BOD?
First of all, let us understand what MBBR, MBBR media, and BOD are. After that, you will be able to understand the interrelation among them.
MBBR expands to Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor. It is an efficient wastewater treatment process that is suitable for treating municipal and industrial wastewater. MBBR technology is used to separate the organic substances, nitrification, and denitrification. MBBR in STP comprises an activated sludge system in which internal plastic carriers with a large surface area are present that helps collect the sludge at the bottom of plastic carriers.
The instruments used in MBBR are known as MBBR media. MBBR activated sludge uses the application of MBBR media to overload the treatment plant while upgrading. BOD is Biochemical Oxygen Demand. It is the amount of oxygen consumed by the bacteria and other organisms while they decompose the organic matter under a specified temperature.
Two types of MBBR media are used in the MBBR STP technology. The first one is Aeration tanks, and the other one is Special plastic carriers. In contrast, the former one means a tank that is similar to the activated sludge tank. It separates the excess bacteria and sludge that directs to the final separator. The latter one is used to provide a surface to the bacteria for their growth. These unique plastic carriers move in the system through aeration tanks and ensure good contact between the wastewater and biomass on the carriers.
So, how the MBBR media does help in reducing the BOD. MBBR media resists the air bubbles that come from the bottom. It forces it to remain in the water for a long time. The more time the bubble remains in the sewage, the more it will let the oxygen transfer into the sewage. Ultimately, more oxygen transferring will reduce the quantum of air required. Additionally, it will also help in reducing the air blower capacity. In this way, the MBBR media helps in reducing the BOD.
