STP or Sewage Treatment Plant:
Sewage treatment plants are used to treat sewage and then discharge it into water streams, so that the untreated sewage discharge does not pollute the water body and make it deadly for water life such as fishes, water plants etc. Continuous discharge of untreated sewageleads to high level of concentration of pollutants in the water.
How a Zero power sewage plant was inspired by a cow's stomach?
This low-maintenance technology produces rather than consumes energy compared to traditional STPs that use energy-intensive motors, exhaust fans, pumps, and blowers. This design does not use chemicals for wastewater treatment, but uses micro-organisms, plant- life, and gravel for wastewater treatment. With 93% of India's wastewater untreated, the companies are developing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to treat up to 1 million litres of wastewater per day without connecting to the power grid.
Solution of Sewage treatment:
There are billions of people living in India. When half of the population uses the toilet, garbage flows into the lake. 93% of India's wastewater is untreated, but this is not a unique issue in India. According to the United Nations, about 80% of the world's wastewater is discharged into the environment untreated.
The current sewage technology needs to be upgraded because the Sewage Treatment Facility (STP) consumes large amounts of electricity and requires a dedicated operator.
The solution is a unique "zero electricity/zero operator" STP that thwarts current models that use power hogging motors to treat wastewater.
What is biomimetic?
Inspired by the cow's stomach, this solution uses the following knowledge:
1. It is a design that replicates the bovine stomach chamber and can be used for natural sewage treatment. A chamber of such criteria is constructed, and sewage is digested in it.
2. Anaerobic bacteria are used as a natural digestion tank to decompose the sludge content in the treated water.
It mimics the digestive system of four bovine chambers and uses cow dung to recreate the bacteria in the stomach. This method is known as biomimetic and mimics the strategies used in nature to solve human problems. The resulting sewage treatment plant is decentralized, uses no electricity or chemicals, is self-sufficient and does not require human intervention.
It's also cheap because it doesn't have bacteria that need oxygen and therefore no expensive fan motors. This kind of treatment system has saved 280 million litres of water and 315 MW of energy since its inception. This is equivalent to powering 35 villages in a year.
