How do Constructed Wetlands operate?

Other contaminants such as suspended particles, organic matter, and nutrients are removed by constructed wetlands (nitrogen and phosphorus). Surface wetlands are less effective in removing pathogens than subsurface wetlands.
Types of Constructed Wetlands
Subsurface flow and surface flow created wetlands are the two basic forms of artificial wetlands.

Nitrogen is released to the atmosphere as a gas through microbial nitrification and subsequent denitrification.
In the root-bed media, phosphorus is co-precipitated with iron, aluminium, and calcium compounds. In surface flow wetlands, suspended solids settle in the water column and are physically filtered out by the medium. In subsurface flow and vertical flow systems, harmful bacteria and viruses are decreased through filtration and adsorption by biofilms on the gravel or sand media.
