What is a Constructed Wetland?
A constructed wetland (CW) is a man-made wetland that is used to treat sewage, greywater, stormwater runoff, and industrial wastewater.
It might also be used for land reclamation after mining or as a way to compensate for natural areas that have been lost to development. Constructed wetlands are man-made systems that employ natural processes such as plants, soil, and creatures to clean wastewater. The artificial wetland's design must be altered based on the type of wastewater to be treated. Both centralized and decentralized wastewater systems have employed constructed wetlands.
How do Constructed Wetlands operate?
Constructed wetlands, like natural wetlands, operate as a biofilter and/or may remove a variety of contaminants from the water or wastewater (such as organic matter, nutrients, pathogens, and heavy metals). Other contaminants such as suspended particles, organic matter, and nutrients are removed by constructed wetlands (nitrogen and phosphorus). In a created wetland, all pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths) are supposed to be eradicated to some level. Surface wetlands are less effective in removing pathogens than subsurface wetlands.
Types of Constructed Wetlands
Subsurface flow and surface flow created wetlands are the two basic forms of artificial wetlands.
Contaminant clearance is aided by the presence of cultivated plants. The filter bed, which is commonly made up of sand and gravel, plays an equally significant function. Although it is not their primary function, some built wetlands may provide habitat for native and migratory wildlife. Water is meant to flow horizontally or vertically through the gravel and sand base in subsurface flow built wetlands. In comparison to horizontal flow systems, vertical flow systems require less area.
What is sewage treatment plant in Constructed Wetlands?
Constructed wetlands can handle raw sewage, storm water, agricultural, and industrial wastewater, among other things. They absorb runoff, decrease nutrient loads, and provide a diversified animal habitat by mimicking the activities of natural wetlands. These wetlands are used to treat either wastewater or greywater.
Netsol’s Treatment wetlands are listed as one of the "best management techniques" for limiting urban runoff by several regulatory authorities.
Contaminants removed by STPs based on wetlands
Wetlands use a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes to filter toxins from wastewater. Understanding these processes is essential not just for building wetland systems, but also for determining how chemicals behave after they reach the marsh.
In theory, wastewater in a manmade wetland is treated as it flows through the wetland medium and plant rhizosphere. Because oxygen leaks from the rhizomes, roots, and rootlets, a thin layer forms surrounding each root hair. Organic matter breakdown is aided by aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Nitrogen is released to the atmosphere as a gas through microbial nitrification and subsequent denitrification.
In the root-bed media, phosphorus is co-precipitated with iron, aluminium, and calcium compounds. In surface flow wetlands, suspended solids settle in the water column and are physically filtered out by the medium. In subsurface flow and vertical flow systems, harmful bacteria and viruses are decreased through filtration and adsorption by biofilms on the gravel or sand media.
