Why is screening important for Wastewater treatment?
When wastewater from a sewer or a truck transporting septic system effluent enters a water treatment plant, it travels through two steps. There are various steps in each stage. Screening is followed by a journey via the grit chamber and into the sedimentation tank. More filtering, disinfection, and potentially de-chlorination are all part of the second stage.
Processes particular to hydropower plants and manufacturers, such as steel mills or pulp/paper mills, are also available with Netsol Water Solutions.
Each one necessitates the treatment of wastewater before it can be released to adjacent rivers, lakes, and oceans. Everyone requires screening to remove materials that could harm the pumps and other treatment equipment’s.
There are some substances in wastewater that might clog pipes and harm water treatment equipment’s. Tampon applicators, diaper liners, sanitary pads, baby wipes, and condoms are examples of items that should not be flushed. Regardless, people do it.
A storm or severe winds at a hydropower plant can blow leaves, branches, and entire trees into the canals. That iswhy, in any of these industries, screening is a crucial initial step!
What is the Process of Screening?
Water passes through a series of stainless-steel screens when it enters a treatment plant or other facility.
You may trap sticks, branches, and items like water bottles, soda cans, and plastic bags with your wide screening. Water is able to get through, but trash is unable to.
Smaller particles and things are caught as the screen size drops. Sludge, grease clumps, and other materials can be captured by finer screen products. To avoid clogging, screens are combined with rakes that eliminate the materials from the screens.
Wastewater flows into the first screen, where it is captured by the screening. The trash rake moves over the screen to remove the debris when the water level is high enough. Water will continue to flow through the screens as a result of this. The debris is transferred to a collection container once the rake completes its pass. The trash rake makes a second pass, cleaning and preparing the rake for the following pass.
Debris is sent from the collection bin to a debris container, where it is washed and sorted. The debris from the debris container could end up in an incinerator, landfill, or composting place.
What happens after screening?
The fine sand and grit that makes its way into wastewater is something that screens can't absorb.
Sand from road maintenance, river silt, and other fine materials flows through the screens and settle in the grit chamber's bottom, where it may be removed. There may still be little particles at this point. They'll be treated in a sedimentation tank, where they'll combine to produce solids that will be pumped away. Fertilizer pellets can be made from sludge from sedimentation tanks.
Around 85% of the organic compounds in wastewater have been eliminated by the time the next stage of treatment begins. It may be filtered via layers of stone or materials where microbes devour the organic particles to extract the remainder. The alternative approach is to pump the water into a tank where it is aerated and mixed with microbes to break down the remaining debris. The residual liquid is piped to a new tank and aerated again before being combined with chlorine to eliminate any lingering bacteria.
