What are the Need and importance of water ultrafiltration?
It is a membrane filtration method. It pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane, by using hydrostatic pressure. The ultrafiltration membrane typically has pores between 103 and 106 Daltons in size. Thus, to create water with high purity and low silt density, ultrafiltration uses pressure as a barrier to suspended particles, bacteria, as well as viruses, endotoxins, and other pathogens.
Let’s discuss the need and importance of water ultrafiltration.
Process of ultrafiltration
Water and solutes with low molecular weight pass through the barrier, whereas suspended solids and solutes with a large molecular weight, are trapped. Except for the size of the molecules it retains, ultrafiltration is not fundamentally different from reverse osmosis, microfiltration, or nanofiltration.
A thin sheet of material that may separate substances when a driving force is applied across it is called a membrane, or more precisely, a semi-permeable membrane. Membrane processes, once thought to be only useful for desalination, are now used more and more often to remove bacteria and other microorganisms, particulate matter, and naturally occurring organic material, which can alter the colour, taste, and odour of water, and interact with disinfectants to produce disinfection by-products (DBP).
What does ultrafiltration remove?
Almost all colloidal particles (0.01 to 1.0 microns), and some of the biggest dissolved pollutants, are removed from water with ultrafiltration (UF). The kind and size of pollutants removed are mostly determined by the pore size, in a UF membrane.
Each UF product is categorized by the producers of UF membranes as having a particular molecular weight cut-off (MWC), which is a rough estimation of the size of pollutants eliminated by a specific UF membrane. A 100,000 MWC UF membrane ensures that almost none of a given standard substance, which has a molecular weight of about 100,000 daltons, will pass through the membrane, when water containing it is introduced to the UF unit.
The size of materials having a molecular weight of 100,000 daltons, ranges from 0.05 microns to 0.08 microns. Most pathogenic organisms and nearly all colloidal particles must be eliminated when utilizing UF membranes, however, most dissolved solids can pass through the membrane without producing issues further down the line, or in the final product water.
Benefits of ultrafiltration
· No requirement for chemicals (coagulants, flocculates, disinfectants, pH adjustment)
· Media depth filtration as opposed to size-exclusion filtration
· Excellent and consistent quality of the treated water in terms of the removal of particles and microorganisms
· Compactness of the process and plant
· Easy automation
· Environmentally friendly
Maintenance of membranes in UF process
Extremely tiny membrane filters are used in ultrafiltration systems, and they must be thoroughly cleaned. Whether a UF system is being utilized to remove organic, inorganic, or even both types of contaminants will affect the cleaning procedure.
The standard cleaning procedure for cleaning tubular membranes calls for using a low foam, medium alkaline detergent at 0.6% to 1% for a maximum of 40 to 60 minutes, in order to eliminate organic impurities. Citric acid, with a maximum concentration of 3.0%, is the best treatment for removing inorganic pollutants.
For one to three hours, the acid should circulate. Oxalic, sulphuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids, can all be used to clean membranes.
