What is Concrete Washout and why is it important?
The wash water left over after cement work has been completed and the equipment has been cleansed with is known as concrete washout water. It is critical to follow suitable processes and practices in order to reduce or avoid the discharge of concrete waste materials into storm drains. This wash water is hazardous and corrosive because it includes harmful metals and has a pH near 12. A pH of 7 indicates neutrality, and numbers larger than 7 indicate increasing alkalinity, whereas lower numbers indicate rising acidity. For freshwater, a pH range of 6.5 to 9 is considered safe.
The concrete truck's drum, chutes and hoppers, wheelbarrows, and hand tools are among the items that are frequently washed after cement work is completed. A slurry of water and concrete washout water is formed, which must be carefully disposed of to avoid contaminating local waterways by entering the storm drain system.
Safe concrete washout is critical to ensuring long-term construction and effective waste management. Concrete washout water has a high alkaline content (pH 11-13), making it as caustic as oven cleaner and exceedingly harmful to plants and ecosystems, killing fish and other aquatic creatures. Not only is it harmful to the environment if concrete wash water is not properly controlled, but it is also costly to resolve.
What are the advantages of Concrete Washout as compared to other Plants?
When compared to other types of plants, there are several advantages:
1: Dry sludge is decreased by up to 85%, lowering disposal expenses
2: There are no flocculants
3: Re-use of water
4: Recovering concrete materials
5: There are no operators required because the system is fully automated
6: 3-100 cement mixers per day productivity
7: Using top-of-the-line components, total mechanical reliability is ensured
8: The plant's versatility allows it to be put in any location without the need for an expensive base
9: Installation takes three days and comes with a full 24-month guarantee
Recycling, treatment, and disposal of wastewater
It is possible to pass equipment through a system of weirs or filters for removing contaminant solids, after which it can be used to wash more equipment’s down, as a worker on a building site or as a contractor. The very first is the coarse aggregate collected at this stage.
The middle stage separates the good from the bad, sand and tiny grit. The third and final stage consists includes a number of tablets that filter. Fines are removed, and the pH is lowered. The filtered wastewater is then pumped back into the system, filtered and released through a filter sock.
Recycling of solid waste
Course aggregate materials washed from concrete truck chutes into a washout container, can be screened and deposited in aggregate bins to be reused on the job site, or they can be returned to the ready mixed plant and washed into a reclaimer. The fine and coarse aggregates are separated when washed out into a reclaimer and deposited in separate piles or bins to be reused in the production of new concrete. Cement fines are separated from wastewater by re-claimers with settling tanks.
Recycling of hardened concrete
The hardened concrete that remains after the wash water in a construction site concrete washout container has been removed or allowed to evaporate can be crushed and reused as a construction material. It's a great road base material that can also be utilised as fill on the job site or shipped to a recycler. Municipal solid waste disposal facilities, private recycling businesses, and huge building sites all have concrete recyclers.
