The calcium and phosphate are no longer available to the plants once they have precipitated. Drip irrigation pipes and submersible pumps will become clogged with calcium phosphate scale. If the water source is strong in bicarbonates, lowering the pH of the nutrition solution may require ten to fifteen times the amount of phosphoric acid. The risk of phosphorus poisoning rises as a result.
