How to work Fish processing Wastewater Treatment Systems?
Fisheries generate effluent of different intensity based on the facility operational activities. Washing activities, fish filleting, and storage tank drainage generate wastewater streams with mild to moderate pollution. The best treatment methods for any facility is decided by the intensity of the effluent, the rate of discharge, and the sensitivity of the receiving watercourse.
Netsol has designed number of systems and solutions for the treatment of fish processing wastewater. Our wastewater treatment systems for fisheries address a variety of issues, including:
- A high organic content;
- Solids in suspension;
- Ammonia/nitrogen;
- Grease and oil;
- Odour.
Primary Wastewater Treatment in the Seafood Industry
The essential ingredients in the waste stream should be considered while treating waste water from seafood processing. This waste water includes a high concentration of insoluble suspended materials, which may be removed from the waste stream using chemical and physical methods. Prior to a biological treatment procedure or land application, initial waste collection is recommended. The removal of solids as rapidly as feasible is a crucial concern in the design of a treatment system.
The longer the detention period between waste formation and solids removal, the higher the soluble BOD-5 and COD, with a corresponding drop in by-product recovery. The principal treatment methods for wastewater from seafood processing includes screening, sedimentation, flow equalization, and dissolved air flotation.
1. Screening
Because fish solids dissolve in water over time, timely screening of waste streams is strongly advised. Similarly, high-intensity agitation of waste streams should be avoided before screening or even settling since it might cause solids to disintegrate, making separation more difficult. Screening is frequently utilized in small-scale fish processing factories with modest settling tanks.
2. Sedimentation
Sedimentation is the process of separating solids from wastewater by utilizing gravity to settle the heavier solid particles. Particles that are heavier than water settle to the bottom of a tank or basin in the most basic kind of sedimentation. Sedimentation basins are widely utilized in wastewater treatment and may be found in many flow-through aquatic animal production operations.This procedure is performed not only as part of the main treatment, but also as part of the secondary treatment for solids separation created by biological treatments such as activated sludge or trickling filters.
3. Equalization of Flow
Following the screening and sedimentation procedures, a flow equalisation phase precedes the dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit. Flow equalisation is critical for lowering hydraulic loads in the waste stream. Equalisation facilities comprise of a holding tank and pumping equipment designed to decrease waste stream variations. Over a 24-hour period, the equalising tank will retain excessive hydraulic flow surges and stabilize the flow rate to a uniform discharge rate. The tank has a variable flow into it and a steady flow out of it.
4. Separation of Oil and Grease
The amount of oil and grease in wastewater from seafood processing varies depending on the technique employed, the species processed, and the operating procedure. Gravitational separation may be used to remove oil and grease if the oil particles are big enough to float to the top and are not emulsified; otherwise, the emulsion must be broken first by pH correction. Heat can also be used to break up the emulsion, although it may not be cost effective unless there is an abundance of steam available.
5. Flotation
Flotation is one of the most effective methods of removing oil and grease from suspensions.The most prevalent method is dissolved air flotation (DAF), which is a waste treatment technique that removes oil, grease, and other suspended particles from a waste stream.
