effect of temperature on ro membranes, factors affecting reverse osmosis, reverse osmosis feed pressure

What is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a natural process that involves fluid movement through a semi-permeable membrane barrier to remove a wide variety of salts and produce water of high purity.

Which factors determine the size of RO and membrane performance?

The per?meate quantity necessary, feed water salinity, (TDS), permeate quality expected, operating pressure, temperature and recovery ratio will all influence the size of the RO and the membrane used. Other factors such as pH and inorganic ion types, also influence the RO performance.

1: Effect of Pressure: If other parameters like as feed water TDS, feed water temperature, and percent recovery remain constant, more permeate water is produced, and the percent rejection of the membrane increases. However, it must be used in accordance with the manufacturer's design specifications. Otherwise, operating at high pressure will foul or scale the membrane prematurely, limiting membrane performance.

2: Effect of Temperature: Temperature affects the pace of permeate flow and the amount of salt that passes through. Permeate flow rate and percent salt passage increases as temperature rises.

As a result, if the feed water is cooler in the winter, the permeate flow rate will be lower, and salt passing through the RO membrane will be lower (resulting in higher water quality), assuming that other parameters such as feed water TDS, operating pressure, and percent recovery remain constant.

Permeate flow rate and percent salt passing will rise throughout the summer, when feed water temperature is greater, as long as other parameters such as feed water TDS, operating pressure, and percent recovery remain constant. This also means that filling the product tank will take a little longer in the winter than in the summer.

3: Effect of Percent recovery: It is calculated by multiplying the ratio of permeate flow rate to feed flow rate by 100 percent. If other factors such as feed water TDS, operating pressure, and feed water temperature are constant, percent recovery and percent rejection are inversely related.

When the percent recovery is low, more water is drained and squandered, but the performance of your RO membrane improves. Manufacturers of RO systems often propose a percent recovery rate to balance performance and economics.

4: Effect of Low-energy membranes: Theseenable the units to operate at pressures of 150-200 psi, resulting in smaller pressure booster pumps and lower power usage. From 500-700 microsiemens of input water, these membranes will create water with a purity of approximately 10 microsiemens. A different spectrum of membranes can be employed if a greater permeate quality is needed.

Sizing of pre-treatments systems

When sizing the pre-treatment system, the amount of water available on the raw water feed side must be carefully monitored, since the RO system requires a greater feed flow, as the units' pure water recovery is approximately 75%.

Sizing and specification of various RO Models

The height, width and depth of different RO Models is given in the table below:

RO System Dimensions

Height (mm)

Depth    (mm)

Width (mm)

1:Compact (RO 1000-5000)

Conclusion

The 25% concentrate that the RO rejects can be utilized for any application that requires soft water, such as wash water, grey water for toilet flushing, or cooling tower make-up in some situations. The usage of this water reduces the amount of waste in the feed supply.
