What is the use of ETP in the steel and iron industry?
The iron and steel industry is one of the most significant and vital industries, serving as the primary driving force fuelling a nation's economic and technical advancement.
However, this business has been connected with significant Environmental damage and massive water use from its start. Various steel mill units release effluents including hazardous pollutants, poisonous and unutilized components, necessitating mitigation.
Steel use in many industries is increasing in tandem with an increase in water demand. In India, around 25 to 60 cubic meters of water are required to produce one metric ton of steel. These numbers provide context for the world's already devastating water scarcity. It is critical that wastewater treatment technologies advance dramatically in order to reduce fresh water usage and move towards zero effluent discharge.
Water Use in the Iron & Steel Industry
Steel mills' water requirements vary greatly, owing mostly on the quantity and quality of the available supply. The usage of as little as 1500 gal of water per ton of product has gotten a lot of attention in one case where recirculation is widely used, partly owing to a lack of supply.
A value of 65,000 gal per ton of product has also been commonly stated, and it has proved valid in certain sites with almost infinite water supply. Many major facilities have used 30,000-40,000 gal of water per ton of product; real consumptive use of water. Water extracted but not returned, is likely less than 1000 gal per ton of output.
Waste-Water generated
The numerous wastewaters from a typical steel factory are studied individually here, broadly divided according to the processes that produce them. However, descriptions of the different procedures must keep in mind that no such clear-cut segmentation occurs in actual practice.Indeed, one of the most difficult issues in constructing wastewater treatment facilities in older mills is separating waste streams from integrated processes.

Within the steel industry, solids removal, oil and grease removal, removal of biodegradable organics, removal of acids and alkalis, and treatment of hazardous metals are all addressed independently by physicochemical treatment.
Coagulation-Flocculation, Adsorption, Advanced Oxidation Processes, Reverse Osmosis, Electrochemical Techniques, and a combination of one or more of these processes are employed.
