What are Sequencing Batch Reactors?
Sequencing batch reactors (SBR), also known as sequential batch reactors, are industrial wastewater treatment tanks. These reactors handle wastewater in batches, such as sewage or waste from anaerobic digesters or mechanical biological treatment plants.
It is a wastewater treatment technology that uses a fill-and-draw activated sludge technique. In this system, wastewater is pumped into a single "batch" reactor, where it is treated to eliminate contaminants before being released. Equalization, aeration, and clarifying processes take place in a single batch reactor. Two or more batch reactors are employed in a specified sequence of operations to improve the system's performance.
SBRs are classified into two categories
a) The intermittent flow (IF) or true batch reactor, and
b) The continuous flow (CF) system.
What are the components of SBR?
The essential co?mponents of SBR are:
i) Reactor basin
ii) Waste sludge draw-off mechanism
iii) Aeration equipment
iv) Effluent decanter
v) Process control system
SBR treatment consists of a cycle of five stages: Fill, react, settle, draw and idle.
1: Fill: Influent wastewater is added to the reactor during the Fill step. The influent wastewater brings food to the microbes in the activated sludge, thus creating an environment for biochemical reactions to take place.
2: React:In this phase, further reduction or "polishing" of wastewater parameters is allowed. No wastewater enters the basin during this period, and the mechanical mixing and aeration devices are turned on. The rate of organic elimination rises considerably since there are no increased volume or organic loadings. The react phase is when the majority of the carbonaceous BOD is removed.
3: Settle:Activated sludge is allowed to settle under quiescent circumstances during this phase, with no flow entering the basin and no aeration or mixing taking place. This phase is a critical part of the cycle, because if there is no rapid settling of the solids, some sludge can be drawn off during the subsequent decant phase and thereby effluent quality gets degraded.
4: Decant or draw: During this phase, a decanter is used to remove the clear supernatant effluent. After the completion of settle phase, a signal is sent to the decanter to initiate the opening of an effluent-discharge valve. There are floating and fixed-arm decanters.
5: Idle:This step occurs between the draw and the fill phases. Depending on the influent flow rate and the operation strategy, the time varies. A little quantity of activated sludge from the bottom of the SBR basin is pumped out during this phase, a process known as wasting.
What are the Design parameters of Sequencing Batch Reactors?
F?or a typical SBR design, following parameters need to be considered:
1. Characterize the wastewater e.g., design flow, maximum daily BOD loading, TSS loading, pH, alkalinity, wastewater temperature and total phosphorus.
2. Select the number of SBR tanks, the duration of each stage, the duration of the entire treatment cycle, and the number of cycles per day.
3. Select the MLSS concentration.
4. Determine the fill volume (relative to tank volume), determine the decant depths, and determine the SBR tank volume (based on decant depths).
5. For nitrification needs, determine the SRT.
6. Calculate the nitrifiers biomass concentration, and check whether the aeration time will be sufficient.
7. Determine the decant pumping rate, alkalinity requirements, oxygen requirements, and oxygen transfer rate.
8. Estimate the sludge production.
9. Calculate F:M and BOD volumetric loading.
