Coffee generation produces wastewater, also known as coffee effluent, which is a by-product of the coffee manufacturing process. Because, wastewater is a type of industrial water pollution, its treatment and disposal are essential environmental considerations for coffee processing industries.
Let’s understand CPCB guidelines for coffee industry effluent treatment plants.
Water usage in coffee industry
The amount of water utilized in processing is heavily influenced by the type of processing. Wet thoroughly washed processing of coffee cherries necessitates the most freshwater, whereas dry processing necessitates the least. Water usage varies according to sources. Water recycling in the de-pulping process can dramatically reduce the amount required.
The water used to process coffee pollutes the coffee processing machine significantly. The predominant constituent is organic matter, which is derived via de-pulping and mucilage removal. The bulk of organic material in wastewater is very resistant, and COD values, which are the amount of oxygen necessary to stabilize organic matter, by applying a powerful oxidant account for 80% of the pollutant load, with levels reaching 50 g/L.

Note:
1-Under no circumstances shall raw, processed, or diluted effluent be dumped into surface water bodies, or used to recharge groundwater.
2-The non-permeable lining system must be built with well-graded, highly impervious clay or geo-synthetic liners, such as Geo-synthetic Clay Liners (GCL), High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), or a combination of the two, and must have an in-situ coefficient of permeability of less than 1x10-7 cm/sec.
3-The compacted clay liner must be at least 300 mm thick (or two compacted layers of 150 mm minimum thickness each). To guarantee that the finished lining fits the permeability criteria, it must be tested.
4-The effluent storage facilities/lagoons/solar evaporation ponds must be positioned, above the high flood level mark of the surrounding stream, rivulet, etc., with the free board specified below, and at a distance from any water body/stream.
Free Board (cm) 60
Distance (m) 100
The liner system and lagoon specifications are to be completed in one year.
Conclusion
Coffee production is modifying ecosystems, which has a severe impact on plant and animal species that live there. Mono crop coffee cultivation is causing deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution around the world. Changes in soil composition from agricultural land usage cause moisture to evaporate, a lack of crop rotation depletes nutrients without replenishing them, and direct sunlight dries the ground.
Chemical and physical pollution are increasing in rivers and bodies of water, altering aquatic ecosystems. The area of scarce rainforest continues to shrink dramatically. Because, it is doubtful that coffee consumption will decline in the near future, more sustainable land use and farming practices will be required.
