The CPCB's legal regulations require a number of industries to build ETPs for the treatment of effluent, if they have to meet specific requirements and standards. To ensure the equipment performs effectively and safely, the rules cover the positioning of ETPs, the ETP technology to be employed, its operation, and maintenance.
What are the CPCB Guidelines for boilers?
There are certain guidelines for boilers as well that are provided by CPCB. Let’s try to cover them in this blog.
Boiler water treatment
High purity feed water is necessary in the steam boiler sector, to guarantee optimum operation of steam production systems. Due to fewer blowdown requirements and lower chemical consumption in boilers, high purity feed water reduces blowdown frequency by as much as a factor of 10. Lower blowdown frequency also means less money spent on fuel.
A lower concentration of contaminants in the boiler feed water, to contaminate heat transfer surfaces, results in less scale formation. The boiler's corrosion rate is also decreased by the lower impurity level. Because, of the better purity steam produced when a boiler powers a steam turbine, turbine blade erosion is decreased.
What is a boiler feed water treatment system?
Your unique boiler feed water treatment demands are met by a system called a boiler feed water treatment system, which is made up of several different technologies.
Both high-pressure and low-pressure boilers require proper treatment of the boiler feed water. Making sure the right treatment is put in place before issues like fouling, scaling, and corrosion arise, it will go a long way towards preventing expensive replacements or upgrades in the future.
Advantages of boiler feed water treatment system
Boiler feed ?water treatment equipment that is effective and well-designed should be able to:
· Promote internal boiler chemistry control by effectively treating boiler feed water, and removing dangerous contaminants before it enters the boiler.
· Use steam condensate as much as possible.
· Minimize rust in the return line.
· Prevent plant outages and boiler breakdowns.
· Prolong the life of the equipment
CPCB Guidelines for boilers
Steam generation capacity (tone/hour) |
Particulate matters emission (mg/Nm3) |
Less than 2 | 1200* |
2 to less then 10 | 800* |
10 to less then 15 | 600* |
15 and above | 150** |
* Cyclone/multi-cyclones is advised to be used with the boiler as the control equipment, to achieve the necessary criteria.
** Bag filter/ESP is advised as control equipment with the boiler, in order to comply with the requirement.
Note: For all types of boilers, the reference value for particulate matter emission requirements shall be 12% of CO2 correction.
The former restrictions announced under Schedule I at serial number 34 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 by notification GSR 742(E), dated 30th August 1990, shall be superseded by these limits.
Small Boilers' Stack Height
The formula must be used to determine the necessary stack height for small boilers, burning coal or liquid fuels.
H=14.Q.0.3
Where,
H is the total stack height measured in metres above the ground. The stack height must always be at least 11 metres.
Q is the kg/hr SO2 emission rate. The maximum SO2 emission limit of 400 mg/Nm3 must be satisfied by supplying the requisite control equipment, with a minimum stack height of 11 metres in cases where installing all stacks is not practical, using the formula above.
Water treatment technologies used in boilers
Because, ion exchange regeneration occur less frequently using reverse osmosis (RO) in feed water purification systems, chemical expenses are decreased. A comprehensive system, which comprises RO and ion exchange, often results in a more cost effective system when compared to systems that don't use RO.
However, the use of conventional RO necessitates the extensive usage of pretreatment unit operations, which raises the overall cost of the system.
