Why should I test my water regularly?
Water used for drinking purpose is also known as “potable water”, is water that is safe to drink and prepare food.
The amount of water to maintain health depends upon the physical activity, age, environmental conditions and health related issues. About 1 to 2 billion people still lack access to potable water. Water can be contaminated by physical, chemical and biological contaminants. This contamination can happen anywhere between the treatment plant and consumer supply connection.
WATER TESTING
Water testing is carried in order to make sure that the water we are consuming is free from pollutants. This is done by a vast number of tests and analysis. It should be noted that everyone should test their water supply at least annually. This testing can be either carried by government organizations trying to regulate the water quality for the protection of human health. Water testing can be also carried out on individual basis in order to ascertain the quality of water for consumption. In order to keep the source of water safe and free from environmental risks and potential health disorders, one must test the water regularly.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
We all are living in space age, where in science and technology have developed ample number of methods to test your quality of water. With the help of kits we can detect thousands of number of contaminants. The list of available testing methods is out of scope of this article but I will try to explain briefly about some important ones.
As discussed, some tests can be as expensive as they while some of them are low tech versions which are economically viable.
· TEST STRIPS: These help in detecting a particular contaminant by changing color.
· COLOR DISK KIT: This test works on same principle while it can detect multiple numbers of contaminants in your water.
· DIGITAL METRES: Hand held digital meters are potable and can also detect various contaminants. This is used to check water quality at any place due to its portability.
However, these tests are usually employed for preliminary checks as their accuracy is not dependable as compared to that of laboratory analysis.
Laboratory testing kits are considered to be most effective to detect wide range of issues. The process takes just three simple steps:
· Order a sampling kit.
· Send it to the nearest laboratory.
· Get the analysis done.
