Water is one of the crucial things given by the god on this planet to survive. It is a primary source of living life on Earth. If you choose not to save water and necessarily clean water, you have almost invited yourselves to end your wish to live a healthy life.
Indeed, we cannot deny the importance of clean and safe drinking water. We, the people, survive because we live on Earth. A planet where life, land, air, water exists. The Earth’s surface is covered with 70% of water bodies. Earth is also known as an ocean planet. But to our dismay, only a few people have access to clean and safe drinking water, which seems to be an unfair situation.
Unhygienic water is the root cause of many problems for human health and our environment. Research suggests that only less than a percent of freshwater is accessible to humankind. Isn’t this data a concern? Does this mean that most of us drink dirty water and invite diseases to plague our bodies? Approximately 80% of the world’s wastewater is dumped untreated into water bodies such as lakes, oceans, seas, ponds, etc.
Though we know how important clean water is, we certainly do not know what water pollution is and why it is a concern. Let us talk about it a bit.
What is water pollution, and why is it a concern for us?
Before we point out why water pollution is a concern for us, we need to understand the true meaning of water pollution. Water pollution means when harmful substances such as chemicals, fertilizers, microorganisms are thrown in the water bodies negligently without treating them and rendering water of degrading quality that becomes toxic for the environment and human life.
If water is contaminated, it can become toxic to human and environmental health. It can become a cause for causing diseases such as cancer, hormone disruption, altered brain function, damage to immune and reproductive systems, and cardiovascular and kidney problems.
Contaminated water, if ingested, can cause serious health problems. Water pollution is a concern because no one on this planet wants to live an unhealthy and sick life. Humans get affected by the harmful water and the marine life that exists under the water. Various stances have occurred in the past that have led to the killing of life of different aquatic animals.
Why is water pollution happening? What are the causes of water pollution?
Water is considered to be the Universal Solvent. It means that it can easily dissolve the substances in it. Therefore, it becomes elementary for water to get prone to pollution.
There are many causes behind water pollution. These are mentioned here as below:
1. Sewage and Wastewater
After the water is used, it becomes wastewater. It includes water used in toilets, sinks, washbasins, showers, agricultural fields, etc. The United Nations estimates that around 80% of the water is dumped into water bodies without treatment that causes water pollution.
2. Agriculture
The industry consuming the most significant water is the agricultural industry. It causes water pollution through rainwater. The agricultural contaminants contain high values of phosphorus and nitrogen acids that encourage the growth of algal blooms. These act as a toxin to kill fishes, seabirds, and marine animals.
3. Plastics and Garbage
1.4 billion tons of waste is produced every year. Around 10% of them contain plastics. Plastics and Garbage proves to be harmful in many ways. It also becomes a cause of the destruction of marine animals, fishes, and other human life.
What are the effects of water pollution?
Some of the effects of water pollution are as follows:
- 1. Catching diseases: One of the most detrimental effects of water pollution is that it gives rise to many diseases. Contaminated water acts like a breeding ground for mosquitoes, flies, and other diseases. If consumed, it can even lead to diarrhea—various conditions such as typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, malaria, dengue, etc.
- 2. Eutrophication: Contaminated water, particularly water with chemicals, leads to the growth of algae. Algae is the food of bacterias. When bacterias sit on the algae, the amount of oxygen decreases. As a result, it severely affects the survival of aquatic plants and animals.
- 3. Disruption in the food chain: When aquatic plants and animals consume toxins and pollutants present in the water, non-vegetarian people eat those animals such as fish, shellfish, etc., and hence they also become ill. Thus in this way, the food chain is disrupted.
Take the necessary steps and reduce water pollution. Keep your environment safe and preserve clean drinking water. Do not consume contaminated or unfiltered water; otherwise, you are yourself inviting problems for you and your family.
