What exactly is a Water footprint?
Simply put, a water footprint is a measurement of how much water is required to generate an item or service. Water footprints exist for processes, goods, companies, sectors, and regions, and determining them is a time-consuming procedure that requires consideration of the water used at each link in the value chain.
Measuring water footprints is becoming increasingly relevant as Governments, the commercial sector, and the general public seek more efficient methods to manage freshwater resources. Fortunately, numerous innovative tactics and technology have evolved to assist in reducing water consumption.
Virtual water and water footprint
Water footprints account for both direct and indirect, virtual water usage.
The term "virt?ual water" refers to the water that is required indirectly to manufacture substances. The water footprint of a woollen sweater, for example, comprises water from the instant rainfall on the ground to nourish the feed crops that support sheep. It also considers the water required to wash, treat, dye, and turn the wool into cloth.
Pollutants infiltrate the water utilized along the route, as does the quantity of water necessary to dilute the polluted water.
A metric ton of wool may require 500,000 gallons or more of water to produce. While the sweater we buy does not ultimately contain water, its water footprint does include all of the water used in its creation contained in it as virtual water.
Green, blue, and grey water
A water footprint considers three types of water: green water, blue water, and grey water.
a) Rain is termed green water when it is held in soil and root zones or when it lingers on fields or crops for an extended period of time after it has fallen.
b) Fresh surface water and groundwater from lakes, rivers, and aquifers are examples of blue water.
c) While grey water can refer to wastewater from sinks, showers, and bathtubs in one context, the phrase has a different connotation when it comes to water footprints. It is the amount of water needed to dilute dirty water to meet natural ambient background concentrations while exceeding water quality regulations.
These three categories can be supplemented with water from a typical source treated with a variety of methods.
Water Footprint Reduction
Desalination can supplement blue water resources from non-traditional water sources such as saltwater and brackish surface or groundwater. Long thought to be prohibitively expensive for many applications, modern improvements have substantially reduced-price ranges.
Water reuse can help to reduce blue water footprints by supplying high-quality water for non-potable purposes such as agricultural irrigation, toilet flushing, and some industrial activities.
How can Netsol Water help?
Netsol's modular treatment facilities employ membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) technology to deliver biological treatment that meets the highest agricultural reuse criteria.
Netsol's MABR technology also significantly reduces energy and carbon footprints and the machines employ expedited nitrogen removal to manage even high-strength anaerobic digestion energy recovery side streams.
