What are the strategies for preventing water pollution in power plant?
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), coal-fired power stations account for about a third of all harmful pollutants discharged into our rivers and streams from all industrial sources, significantly more than any other industry.
The new "Effluent Limitation Guidelines" for steam electric power plants make it illegal to discharge pollutants into the environment including discharge of ash effluent and impose new limits on arsenic concentrations, and much more.
Strategies are available for preventing and controlling wastewater pollution in power plants
Although the wastewater discharged from the power plants must be treated thoroughly, pollution prevention is critical. The method of clean sewage and centralized treatment is adopted based on the water quality characteristics of various types of waste and sewage, and wastewater from each water system is concentrated in the industrial wastewater treatment station, desulfurization wastewater treatment system, coal water treatment system, and domestic sewage treatment system.
Let us have a look on some of the methods to prevent and control wastewater pollution in power plants:
1: Desulfurization wastewater treatment system: Desulfurization wastewater is utilized for dry ash humidity control, ash field spraying, and dry slag humidity control following treatment with a desulfurization wastewater treatment equipment.
2: Industrial wastewater treatment station: Industrial wastewater is collected by the factory's industrial wastewater sewer, then pumped to the industrial wastewater treatment room through the industrial wastewater regulating tank. The clean water pump lifts the treated clean water and recirculates it to the desulfurization and circulating water systems. Grilles, industrial wastewater regulating tanks, industrial wastewater treatment equipment, industrial wastewater recycling clean pools, and clean water lifting pumps are all part of the industrial wastewater treatment system.
3: Drainage that is non-recurring: Drainage that does not occur on a regular basis, such as boiler pickling water, air preheater cleansing water, and so on.The boiler and high-pressure steam and water pipelines must be pickled once every 4-5 years after the new boiler is set up and overhauled, and the boiler pickling wastewater is discharged irregularly. After treatment using industrial wastewater treatment equipment, boiler pickling wastewater is transferred to the plant's boiler pickling wastewater tank or industrial wastewater treatment station and recycled.
4: Coal water treatment system: After being collected and processed, the water for hydraulic cleaning, spraying, and dust removal in the coal conveying system is provided from the drainage system. The coal conveying system's washing and drainage are lifted by the pumps in each transfer station and sent back to the coal water treatment room via the coal water pipeline for treatment. It is reused for coal conveying system washing after an integrated sedimentation and filter treatment.
5: Sewage treatment system:It is collected through the domestic sewage drainage pipe network in the plant area to the domestic sewage treatment station, treated, and utilized for plant greening before being released into the industrial wastewater treatment station.Installing tertiary treatment at power plants has certain economic and environmental advantages; tertiary treatment rejects 10-30% of input water, and rejecting wastewater at the WWTP reduces pumping costs significantly.
Conclusion
Nowadays, wastewater treatment plants are one of the most significant facilities in residential buildings, commercial office buildings, hotels, hospitals, resorts, many other commercial sectors, and industrial sectors.
Taking these considerations into account, Netsol Water can customize WWTPs and STPs as per clients’ requirement. These treatment facilities require less maintenance and is known for producing water that is safe to re-use or discharge after treatment. We can offer these structures in a variety of sizes to meet the needs of our clients. We provide design and consulting services for various types of industries including power plants.
