Sand Filter: This is a water purification step in the water or wastewater treatment process. It is used to remove suspended matter by using sand as a filter material. The water that needs to be purified slowly sinks through the sand bed and the impurities are left behind in the fine pores of the sand.
Screen Filter: It is used for filtration of water and wastewater generally in irrigation and industrial applications. Screens made of stainless steel, polypropylene, and polyester are used to separate out sand and other fine impurities from water or wastewater.
Sedimentation: It is a process of water or wastewater treatment in which particles in suspension are allowed to settle under the influence of gravity. It is a basic process of water purification which makes use of gravity to remove suspended solids from water or wastewater.
Septic Tank: It is a small sewage treatment chamber constructed of R.C.C or masonry which mainly treats the waste generated by the domestic household. These are generally used for places that are not connected by a sewerage system.

Skimmer: A skimmer is an equipment used to separate oil from water. Oil skimmers are used to remove oil, grease and fats from water or wastewater prior to its further treatment.
Slow sand filter: It is used in water or wastewater purification to effectively remove turbidity and pathogens by allowing the water or wastewater to percolate through a porous sand bed. It works primarily through biological activity and is a low cost, simple to operate technique used to remove contaminants from water or wastewater.
Stabilization pond: These are open shallow basins used for wastewater treatment. These use natural factors such as biodegradation, sunlight, temperature, sedimentation to treat wastewater. These provide secondary biological treatment to the wastewater which has received some form of primary treatment.
Thermal hydrolysis: It is a process applied in wastewater treatment plants with anaerobic digestion. It is a two-stage process combining high pressure boiling of waste followed by decompression for treating industrial and municipal solid waste.
Trickling filter: It is a fixed bed bio filter that operates under aerobic conditions. Wastewater is continuously sprayed over the filter and the organic solids get aerobically degraded as the wastewater trickles through the pores of the filter.
Ultra-filtration: It is a water purification process in which water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane so that the suspended solids get retained while water passes through the membrane.
UV disinfection: This disinfection method makes use of short wavelength ultra violet rays to inactivate microorganisms.
Vermi-filtration: It is an economically efficient aerobic treatment consisting of biological reactors that filters organic matter from wastewater. It is commonly used for agro-industrial wastewater treatment.
Vacuum evaporation: This is a technique of transforming liquid effluent into two flows, one of good quality water and another of concentrated waste. Dramatic reduction in the volume of liquid waste is achieved by this technique.
