What are the various types of water filtering media?
1- ANTHRACITE
Anthracite is a high-quality product that must have the NSF certificate and must comply with drinking water standards, for the treatment of water for human consumption. The best applications for it are single-layer or multimedia filters.
Its angular shape, combined with sand, garnet, or gravel, allows for high performance with a smaller pressure drop. As a result, there are better filtration runs and longer intervals between backwashes.
2- ZEOLITE
Zeolite must be NSF certified as well. It is strongly advised that it be used in drinking water treatment facilities, which desalinate seawater and brackish water. It can hold suspended particles as small as one micron in size, and has a low carbon footprint.
The ability of zeolite to filter at greater speeds, results in a significant reduction in SDI and turbidity, as well as an extension of the duration between washes.
3- ACTIVATED CARBON
GAC stands out for its high carbon and iodine content, which enables it to obtain high adsorption performance. It can be either mineral or vegetable-derived (from coconut shells). GAC has a rich internal porosity and a substantial free surface area for adsorption, and it is activated by hot water vapour.
It is a very powerful adsorbent material for the elimination of undesirable chemicals, mostly organic matter and chlorine, in both gases and liquids.
4- GARNET
Garnet must meet even the most stringent requirements for drinking water purification, wastewater treatment, and industrial effluents.
It is advised to use it in dual filters with Anthracite or even single-layer filters, since it is particularly well suited for the filtration of water with high metal concentrations.
5- SAND
Sand media is widely used for the treatment of drinking water. Silica sand follows a rigid classification procedure, to produce a consistent particle size distribution. Additionally, a variety of granulometries, ranging from 0.5 mm to 5 mm, are available.
It is a great option for any filtration device because it is completely natural, washed, odourless, clean, and free of heavy metals and hazardous compounds.
6- GRAVEL
Gravel must comply with the national standards for the treatment of water for human consumption. It has physical qualities that distinguish it as a product of the highest quality.
It is a great and affordable product for storing other filtering media, because of its outstanding mineral and composition features, like Anthracite, Zeolite, Silica Sand and Garnet.
7- LIMESTONE
Limestone must contain more than 98% calcium carbonate. This is a special substance used in desalination plants during the post-treatment phase, and following the reverse osmosis stage to remineralize water. It must comply with standards, which governs its usage in the filtration of drinking water.
