What is Zeolite?

Firstly, when it comes to filters, the more pores there are within the treatment media, the better the filtration performance. Because, zeolite media have many pores, they not only capture particles between grains, but also absorb them into their pores to capture them.

This is accomplished in part by the zeolite minerals' capacity for cation exchange, in which it accepts positive ions from the water, such as dissolved metals, sodium, and ammonia, and substitutes them with something else.

Secondly, zeolite has a high effective surface area due to its high pore density, which means it can capture high concentrations of contaminants, before back washing is required. Adsorption can also be used by the media to capture and eliminate particles. This is an active effect in which particles adhere to the surface of the medium, rather than passively becoming trapped between grains.
