How to treat slaughterhouse wastewater using MBR?
The wastewater produced during the slaughter and processing of livestock is known as slaughterhouse wastewater. It typically contains high concentrations of nitrogen-containing organic compounds, suspended solids, dissolved solids, grease, protein, blood, minced meat, food debris, hair, faeces, sediment, etc., and may also contain a variety of bacteria that are harmful to human health.
Treatment of slaughterhouse effluent is crucial if direct disposal will seriously pollute the environment. Let’s look at the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater using MBR technology.
Process for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment
· Screening
· Adjustment tank
· Dissolved air flotation tank
· Acid hydrolysis tank
· MBR tank
· Disinfection tank
1. Screening
The screen is primarily used to remove large solid particles and floating matter from slaughterhouse wastewater, such as hair and minced meat, in order to stop these pollutants from forming scum in the following processing equipment and blocking the pipeline, damaging the pipeline, and shortening the life of the equipment.
2. Adjustment tank
The primary functions of the adjusting tank are to provide buffer capacity for sewage treatment load, prevent abrupt changes in treatment system load, reduce fluctuation in sewage flow into the treatment system, control sewage pH value, stabilise sewage quality, lower chemical consumption during sewage treatment, and regulate BOD and COD content.
3. DAF Chamber
In wastewater treatment projects for the slaughterhouse industry today, dissolved air flotation machines are frequently used. They are primarily used to remove grease and unclogged fine fluff from slaughterhouse wastewater, prevent pump blockages, and isolate the air layer after grease enters the treatment system.
4. Acid Hydrolysis tank
The wastewater is hydrolysed and acidified in the acid hydrolysis tank after oil is separated from the water, and the water volume and quality are adjusted. Large-molecular-weight proteins and other organic contaminants are to be broken down, into smaller-molecular-weight organic compounds, in order to advance to the next stage of aerobic biochemical treatment.
To efficiently eliminate the ammonia nitrogen in the water, the mixed solution after aerobic treatment is sent to the acid hydrolysis tank, for denitrification treatment.
5. MBR Tank
MBR is a successful fusion of biological treatment and membrane separation technologies. The secondary sedimentation tank in the activated sludge method, for solid-liquid separation treatment, is replaced with membrane separation technology. The MBR tank's primary function is to further reduce pollutant concentrations, and successfully separate sludge from water to maintain consistent effluent quality.
6. Disinfection Tank
The majority of the dangerous bacteria, including E. coli and faecal streptococcus, still exist in the sewage following biochemical treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater. A portion of the germs settle down with the sludge.
Disinfecting the sewage is vital for the protection of human health. The chlorine dioxide procedure is used to disinfect the disinfection tank. The disinfection tank also makes use of UV or ozone treatment.
