How to treat Common impurities in water?
Water, an essential part of our life, is becoming increasingly polluted as a result of increased pollution. Water, as a good solvent, dissolves everything it comes into contact with.
The contaminants pose numerous health risks, some of which are fatal. The old methods of purifying water do not eliminate harmful contaminants or suspended impurities in water, making water treatment necessary.
Water Treatment Plant for treating common impurities in water
To provide safe drinking water to people, drinking water systems employ a variety of different water treatment methods. Coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection, are common water treatment steps used by public water systems.
Water treatment procedures
· Coagulation
The initial step in the treatment of water is typically coagulation. During coagulation, substances that have a positive charge are introduced to the water. The negative charge of dirt and other dissolved particles is balanced by the positive charge in the water.
As a result, the particles and chemicals bind and grow a little bit larger. In this step, specific salts, aluminium, or iron are frequently employed.
· Flocculation
It is the gentle mixing of water that results in the formation of larger, heavier particles known as flocs. Water treatment facilities frequently add extra chemicals during this phase to help with floc production.
· Sedimentation
Sedimentation is one of the processes used by water treatment plants to separate solids from water. Since, flocs are denser than water, they sink to the bottom during sedimentation.
· Filtration
Once the flocs have settled to the bottom of the water, the clear water on top is filtered to remove any remaining solids.Clear water is filtered through filters with varied particle sizes and materials, during the filtering process. These filters remove dissolved particles and germs such as dust, chemicals, parasites, bacteria, and viruses. Odours are also eliminated using activated carbon filters.
In addition to or instead of traditional filtration, water treatment plants can use reverse osmosis or ultrafiltration. When treating recycled water, also known as reused water or salt water for drinking, water treatment plants frequently use reverse osmosis.
· Disinfection
After the water has been filtered, water treatment plants may add one or more chemical disinfectants, such as chlorine, chloramine, or chlorine dioxide to destroy any lingering parasites, bacteria, or viruses.
Water treatment plants will ensure that the water has low levels of the chemical disinfectant, when it leaves the treatment plant to help keep water safe as it travels to homes and businesses. This remaining disinfectant kills germs in the pipes that connect the water treatment plant to your faucet.
Water treatment plants can disinfect water using ultraviolet (UV) light, or ozone in addition to or instead of adding chlorine, chloramine, or chlorine dioxide. UV light and ozone disinfect water well in the treatment plant, but they do not continue to kill germs as the water travels through the pipes, between the treatment plant and your tap.
Conclusion
Traditional methods of water purification do not remove harmful impurities from water. Harmful chemicals like arsenic and fluoride cannot be removed without the assistance, of a specialized purification process.
Installing a RO Plant is the only way to deal with contaminated water. These plants use a multistage purification process that includes RO, UV, and UF to remove various types of impurities, from water at various stages.
