Have you ever noticed red or pink slime forming inside your toilet or on the walls of your shower?
Bathtubs, faucets, and showers attract mildew, soap scum, grime, scale, and tenacious stains. Because minerals in hard water, such as calcium and magnesium, can react negatively with ingredients in bathroom hardware.
Serratia marcescens is this bacterium that thrives in moist environments.
Serratia marcescens is an airborne bacterium or mold that grows in your home's dampest areas, such as shower stalls, bathtubs, bathroom tiles, toilets, sinks, toothbrush holders, and kitchen faucets. It is a naturally occurring bacteria that is stirred up in the air, lands in wet areas, and begins forming colonies of pink slime in your bathtub or somewhere worse.
Not only does this pink slime look disgusting, but it has been linked to pneumonia, wound infections, and urinary tract infections in hospitals, so it must be eradicated.
The bacteria thrive in materials containing phosphorus or fatty substances (such as feces in your toilet bowl or soap residue in your shower), making your bathroom an ideal environment for them. Because Serratia marcescens forms a pink/red biofilm at room temperature, it is easily misidentified as an iron-related water quality issue.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this bacteria do not fare well in chlorinated water. However, because chlorine is a volatile compound, the pink slime may form if water stands for long enough for residual chlorine to dissipate (for example, in a toilet or on a shower curtain).
This brings us to another common misconception: water treatment equipment can be beneficial. Serratia marcescens transports via air, not water, so water filters are unlikely to help.
How to reduce slime in our bathrooms?
You can reduce the amount of pink slime in your bathroom by doing the following:
- Ventilate the room for at least 30 minutes before and after taking a shower.
- To remove soap residue from your shower and tub, use an after-shower spray or a squeegee.
- Reduce the amount of moisture and soap scum left on surfaces.
Here's how to "get rid of" it:
- Make a solution of one part vinegar and one part water.
- Spray the solution on the pink slime that has already left its mark.
- Allow for a 10-minute soak.
- Scrub the bacteria away.
While vinegar, chemicals, and fabric softener sheets are great temporary fixes for this buildup, you'll spend less time and money on harsh chemicals and scrubbing scale away if you solve the core problem with a more environmentally friendly water softener.
A water softener is a long-term solution to hard water scale. Installing a water softener system in the basement or garage of your home removes hard water minerals from the water before it flows to your pipes and fixtures, reducing scale buildup.
