How to Mobile Wastewater Treatment in the Construction sites?
During the construction of large projects in remote location, usually there is no sewerage connection available. Many construction sites do not have direct access to main sewer. The wastewater produced by the staff of the construction has to be collected and transported to a communal wastewater treatment plant. Depending on the volume of wastewater produced and the distance to the nearest wastewater treatment plant, both money and time gets incurred.
The construction site wastewater must be managed in a sustainable way that does not impact the environment. The wastewater from the construction sites is highly polluted with a high concentration of ammonia and BOD load.
Construction sites are generally temporary, so building a fixed wastewater treatment plant is not a viable option. Number of workers on site can fluctuate significantly from week to week. Sanitation facilities for site staff including toilets, showers and catering facilities all results in significant amounts of construction site wastewater being produced every day.
A mobile treatment plant can treat the produced wastewater to a specific standard which allows the direct discharge to nearby water bodies or the infiltration to the ground.
Components of a mobile wastewater treatment plant
A mobile wastewater treatment plant consists of containers with wastewater treatment equipment preinstalled into them, to allow ease of transportation. All units of the treatment process can be preinstalled into a container. These typically include the following elements:
Mechanical or bar screen – the aim of the mechanical screen is to filter out all of the coarse solids from the raw wastewater. The waste material such as leaves, plastic, stones etc. is then stored for disposal. The debris is disposed of in an incineration plant.
Aerated tanks – the water filtered out from mechanical screens reach aeration tanks. In these tanks oxygen is circulated with the help of propellers to ensure the wastewater entering the reactor container is well mixed and homogenized for the growth of bacteria.
Biological reactor container –The main biological treatment process occurs here.
Clarifier – to allow for the heavy solids to sink to the bottom and the cleaner influent to flow, clarifier is used. The solids that fall to the bottom of the clarifier are known as sludge, which after discarding is commonly used as fertilizer.
A technical container – houses all aeration equipment, control panels and other mechanical and electrical components.
In addition to these main components, there are a variety of additional modules that can be added to any mobile wastewater treatment plant to meet the requirements.
