In India, wastewater treatment plants use a mechanical procedure called as media filtration. Here, the absorption processes are both biological and physical. The main steps in medial filtration are the straining, sedimentation, interception, and diffusion. The last step is inertial compaction.
Let’s discuss in detail about the working of dual media filters (DMF) in water and wastewater treatment plants.
What is Dual Media Filter or DMF?
The main purpose and goal of a DMF or a dual media filter is to eliminate turbidity, as well as the dispersed particles, which are as small as 10–20 microns. With a high filtration rate, dual media filters offer very effective particle elimination. Additionally, it aids in removing pigment and odour from water. A layered bed of filter media is present inside a dual media filter.
Types of dual media filter
The three most popular dual media filter kinds are:
· The Calcite filter
A substance called calcite can be found in the surroundings naturally. As a result, it is economical. Water's pH levels can be improved with the aid of calcite filtration. They also make water neutral. This prevents pipelines from becoming strained.
· Anthracite filter
Dual media screens use this filter along with sand. It is more appropriate because of its lower weight than sand. Additionally, due to its high carbon concentration, it can withstand more chemicals. It is regarded as one of the finest methods for removing turbidity and suspended solids. Anthracite is used as a carrier in biofilm therapy. Additionally, it promotes development.
· Activated carbon filters
Impurities from liquids and gases are absorbed as a consequence of the opening of tiny pores between the carbon atoms.
Activated carbon filters are used to eliminate organic materials, chlorine, and disinfectants from water. They are also known to improve water's flavour. Reverse osmosis or any other filtering method should come after this one to prevent oxidation.
Working of Dual media filter for water treatment processes
1: The DMF consists of a frontal piping system, manual valves, a composite pressure vessel, a top distribution assembly to evenly distribute incoming water across the filter's cross section, and a bottom collector assembly to collect filtered water.
2: The filtration media is made up of various layers of sand. To support the bottom distribution assembly & Media, supporting media (gravels and pebbles) shall be supplied under the bed. Water flows through media with comparatively smaller holes in a dual media filter.
3: The biggest compounds are released by anthracite. With the aid of the adhesion and straining properties of garnet and sand combined, the subsequent layer removes particulates.
4: As the cleaned water descends through the filtration bed, the turbidity and suspended debris are kept on the sand top.
5: An under drain device in the vessel's bottom collects filtered water, which is then pumped to the service outlet.
DMF is periodically cleaned by backwashing. When the difference pressure across the bed reaches 5 kg/cm2, DMF will backwash. The turbid material is suspended in the filter bed and eventually flushed out through the backwash valve, when water is added in the opposite direction of the service flow, which is upward from the outlet nozzle.
As opposed to during a single filtration procedure, filters do not block as quickly. It is primarily caused by the dual media filters numerous depths or filters.
Features of Dual Media Filters
· Customized settings to meet needs.

· Provide a daily operation and maintenance log-sheet, test certificates, component data sheets, and user manuals for each project.
· Fast approval processes that maintain project momentum.
· Easy installation, precise control, and maintenance.
· Produces high-quality neutral water and a range of common components at affordable prices.
Uses of dual media filter (DMF)
Wherever water is polluted with turbidity, iron, suspended solids, etc., dual media filters are typically used. Under various circumstances, they are one of the best methods to remove impurities. Thus, dual media filters are frequently used in the following filtering procedures:
· Iron, Manganese, and Turbidity are removed in drinking water purification
· Pre-treatment to the RO procedure
· Desalination processes pretreatment
· Treatment of recreational pool water
· Cleaning of wastewater
· Sewage tank growth
· Floating concrete
· Cleaning of Ground Water resources
· Treatment of Industrial Water
Advantages of Dual Media Filters (DMF)
1: When it comes to drawing in significant quantities of water-borne particulates, dual media filters are more effective than standard sand media filters. This occurs as a result of the numerous filter layers with various particle densities.
2: Dual media filters last longer than sand media filters. This is as a result of the dual media filtration bed being fully utilised.
The following are some additional advantages:
· For contaminated water, the use of dual media filters is a suitable solution. Turbidity, organic debris, and many other impurities are thought to be effectively removed by it. However, this procedure only removes a portion of the dissolved solids.
· Several water treatment plants use the dual media filter technique. It is primarily due to its sturdy structure and dual filtration process.
· Efficiently removes turbidity and TSS.
· High capacity to remove dirt.
· A fast rate of filtration.
· Simple maintenance.
· Simple implementation.
· Low installation costs.
· Dependable and effective.
· Minimal electricity needed.
· Minimum start-up period.
