Is it possible to purify sewage water?
So, here's the million-dollar question:
Can sewage water be purified? Yes! It is entirely feasible to purify sewage water.
There are, however, differing levels of cleansing. For example, sewage water can be cleansed sufficiently to be utilized for irrigation and agriculture. It can then be cleansed further for drinking reasons.
The first level entails converting sewage water to recovered water. It's honestly not that difficult. The sewage water is subjected to several distillation processes. The end outcome is clean, no longer brown water.
However, the water isn't pristine at this point! As a result, it can only be used for agricultural and industrial purposes.
The next step is to convert the recovered water into recycled water. At this point, the recovered water receives extra treatment to make it safe for consumption.
Here are the three steps of the purifying process-
Stage 1: Preliminary Treatment
Treatment at this step entails eliminating solid particles from sewage water. The purpose of this stage is to remove big particles from the liquid solution.
Stage 2: Secondary Treatment
Treatment becomes considerably more rigorous and important at this point. This step is concerned with eliminating any organic waste from the sewage water. Bacteria are usually the key instrument at this stage, since they devour the sludge in the sewage water.
When this stage is completed, the sewage water is often free of toxins. When it comes to reclaimed water, purification usually terminates at this point.
Stage 3: Tertiary Treatment (Final Polishing)
The water is extremely clean at this point. There are still some micro pollutants in the water. And, in general, these pollutants are poisonous and dangerous.
As a result, the purpose of this stage is to remove these tiny particulates from the water. This is accomplished by UV-based purification. At this level, there is also a sand filtering system to cleanse the water, or a Reverse Osmosis based system to clear water completely, out of the pollutants.
As a result, following this stage, the water is entirely clean and safe to drink.
How is Sewage Water reused for purposes other than drinking?
There are several applications for recovered sewage water. These numerous uses are classified into six groups, which are as follows:
1. Urban Applications
One of the most common ways for individuals to reuse sewage water is for urban uses. This includes situations like the ones listed below.
- Irrigation of several public parks,
- Private garden irrigation,
- Irrigation of sports fields,
- Application in fire-fighting,
- Flushing of public toilets,
- Dust suppression,
- Vehicle cleaning.
2. Agricultural Applications
Another way that people reuse sewage water is to utilize it for agricultural reasons. This includes situations like the ones listed below.
- Watering both commercially processed and unprocessed food crops,
- Hydroponic farming,
In general, this application is preferred. This is because it supplies water at a lesser cost, than other means of collection. Its make-up also makes it an excellent fertilizer.
3. Industrial Applications
People may reuse sewage water by using it for industrial reasons. This includes its application as:
- Water for cooling,
- Water for processing,
- Water for cleaning,
- Compaction of the soil,
- Creating concrete,
- Dust suppression,
- Towers and recirculating cooling systems.
4. Recreational Applications
Recycled wastewater is also commonly used for recreational purposes. This includes its application in:
- Golf course irrigation,
- Different private aesthetic impoundments,
- There are several private recreational impoundments for fishing, boating, and swimming.
5. Environmental Applications
There is also a continuing usage of recycled wastewater for environmental purposes. This includes its application in:
- Recharge of aquifers,
- Natural habitats,
- Stream enhancement,
Typically, the objective is to employ these recycled fluids to improve and preserve these varied bodies of water.
6. Potable Applications
Recycled wastewater is also widely used in potable applications. This includes its application as:
· Water consumption,
· Drinking water supply supplementation.
Such sewage water, however, must have gone through a highly trustworthy filtration procedure. There is also a testing and monitoring system in place, to verify that the water is safe to consume.
