WATER IS ESSENTIAL FOR ANIMALS
Because the water on Earth today is all we have, we must take care of it. Humans, of course, require fresh water to survive, but so do all other living things on our planet, including kangaroos, gum trees, mushrooms, ferns, etc.
Water is the primary component of all living things.
Did you know that a chicken is made up of 75% water? What is the percentage of an earthworm and what is the percentage of a tomato? And you're made up of 65 percent water.
That is, we are mostly made of water, not just because we need it to live.
Animals require fresh water to function properly. They get water not only from drinking, but also from the food they eat. Water is essential for bodily functions such as temperature regulation, nutrient uptake, waste removal, body weight, and health. Losing one tenth of the body’s water can results in death as the body will shut down.
ROLE OF HARD WATER FOR ANIMALS
Serving hard water to animals is safe, according to animal experts, because the minerals present do not cause any known health problems. However, in some cases, a veterinarian may advise a dog owner to avoid giving their pets untreated tap water. This has nothing to do with hard water's mineral content. This warning is about the chemicals that some municipalities add to their water to disinfect it.
To disinfect the water supply, many water treatment plants use chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, and chloramine. They have a high kill rate against germs, bacteria, and viruses. If you live in a hard water area, various contaminants are more likely to find their way into your unfiltered tap water. This is also a risk if your water comes from a private well, and you should have your water tested at least twice a year.
What is the role of Soft Water for Animal?
People are sometimes concerned that softened water contains too much salt for pets' diets; however, softened water contains no salt. Salt is used to soften the resin that acts on the water in a water softener, but it is not ingested. The softening process raises the sodium content of the water slightly, but it is still safe to drink.
Softened water is safe for animals to drink but there are couple of exceptions.
If pet is on special diet: If your pet is on a sodium-restricted or sodium-free diet, avoid giving them softened water to drink. The most significant disadvantage of soft water for dogs and other pets is the same as it is for humans. The ion-exchange process results in the addition of salt to the water. To put this into perspective, this is the same amount of salt found in a slice of ham for every gallon of soft water. As a result, most pets are unlikely to notice any difference at all. If you are concerned, a potassium-based water softener salt can be used instead of a sodium-based alternative. Although potassium salt is less harsh than sodium salt, it is more expensive.
If pets are fishes:If you have fish in an indoor aquarium or an outdoor pond, check with the aquatics store where you purchased them, or consult a veterinarian or aquaculture expert. Minerals in either hard or soft water affect some exotic, ornamental, or tropical fish. If you're considering keeping aquarium fish for the first time, it's a good idea to first learn about their water requirements. If you have a water softener, you may want to keep fish that prefer a soft water environment for convenience.
