INTRODUCTION
Many of us have heard of "hard water," which refers to excess calcium, magnesium, and other minerals in the water supply.
What, however, are the consequences of hard water?
Scale, a byproduct of hard water, can clog pipes and cause havoc in commercial and industrial plumbing. Because the buildup does not conduct heat, it also interferes with the energy efficiency of your industrial boiler and commercial water heater. Heating water in a scale-covered boiler and water heater tubes requires more energy than in clean ones.
How to Increasing water and energy efficiency in industrial sectors?
Ways of increasing water efficienc?y and energy efficiency in commercial and industrial sectors:
1-WATER SOFTENING: Water softening solves this problem. Hard mineral ions are removed from water by industrial water softeners and replaced with (soft) sodium ions. This is referred to as ion exchange or sodium cation exchange. In addition, unlike calcium, which comes out of solution when heated (creating build-up), salt remains in solution in high heat conditions.
The amount of salt required for the process is proportional to the hardness of the water and the amount of water treated. The higher the mineral content of your water, the more salt is used in the softening process. The cost of the salt can be reduced by purchasing in bulk rather than in smaller quantities. Estimated savings can be calculated using an industrial water softener salt savings calculator. Salt usage can also be reduced by using industrial brine reclaim systems and 6 lb. salting. Regardless of your salt usage, it is the least expensive commercial and industrial boiler chemical used and doesn’t pose a health hazard.
2-DEALKALIZATION: Another factor limiting boiler efficiency in commercial and industrial water systems is alkalinity. An industrial water de-alkalizer can be installed between the commercial or industrial boiler and the water softener. When boilers produce steam, which is pure water, the remaining alkalinity ions become more concentrated. The maximum alkalinity limit is the same for all boilers.
When commercial or industrial boilers reach their alkalinity limits, they discharge the highly concentrated water in order to stay below the maximum alkalinity limits, a process known as blow down. Commercial and industrial dealkalizers use anion resin to create an ion exchange process similar to softeners, replacing offending ions with chloride ions, reducing boiler cycles and thus blowdown. Reduced use of these cycles saves water and energy.
3-REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM: Another option for industrial boiler pre-treatment water purification is to install an industrial reverse osmosis system, which removes 99 percent of the TDS (total dissolved solids). High pressure is used to force water through semi-permeable membranes. This process does not involve any exchange; ions are simply stripped from water molecules as they pass through the reverse osmosis membrane. This method of water treatment prior to the boiler results in the least amount of water and energy loss in the boiler. It also nearly eliminates the need for costly boiler water treatment chemicals.
CONCLUSION
In proper commercial and industrial boiler operations, water softening is always the first course of action. You're wasting water, energy, and chemicals if you don't have it. To ensure maximum efficiency, dealkanization and reverse osmosis are optional but highly recommended equipment.
