How to install the STP plant according to CPCB in India?
Sewage treatment is a critical aspect of environmental management in India, and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) sets guidelines to ensure that industrial units and housing societies adhere to proper sewage treatment standards. Here, we will delve into the CPCB guidelines regarding the manpower required for operating sewage treatment plants (STPs) in both industrial and housing society settings.
CPCB Guidelines for Sewage Treatment Plant Installation
The CPCB, under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, has established guidelines for the installation and operation of STPs. These guidelines cover technology selection, capacity, and manpower for efficient STP operation. Let's break down the calculations for manpower requirements:
Manpower Requirement Calculation for Industries:
Operator: For an industrial STP, one operator is typically required for every 20,000 litres per day (LPD) of STP capacity. So, if your industrial unit has an STP with a capacity of 100,000 LPD, you would need 5 operators.
Supervisor: One supervisor can oversee multiple STPs, typically up to five. The supervisor ensures that operators follow proper procedures and troubleshoot any issues. Therefore, if you have five STPs, one supervisor should suffice.
Lab Technician: An STP lab technician must regularly test and analyse the effluent. One lab technician can typically manage up to 100,000 LPD of STP capacity. If your STP has a capacity of 200,000 LPD, you would need 2 lab technicians.
Helper: The number of helpers required depends on the size of the STP and the complexity of operations. Generally, one helper can assist one operator. For your 100,000 LPD STP with 5 operators, you would need 5 helpers.
Manpower Requirement Calculation for Housing Societies:
STP manpower requirement for housing societies is generally lower than for industrial units. The calculation is as follows:
Operator: Similarly, one operator is usually needed with every 20,000 LPD of STP throughput. Let’s take the STP of a housing society that has 50,000 LPD capacity. For example, you would need 2.5 operators. Because operators cannot be “partially” rented, you would “round up” 3 operator.
Supervisor: As the housing society STPs are small, one person manages various STPs. A supervisor can control up to 10 STPs. So, provided that you have three STPs, one supervisor ought to do the trick.
Lab Technician: The same calculation as for industries is applicable. If you have a 50,000 LPD STP you will need 1 lab tech.
Helper: Helper requirement is identical with industries as well. Only one helper can help one operator. If you have 3 operators, then you require 3 helpers.
Conclusion
There must be strict adherence to CPCB norms for manpower of Sewage Treatment Plants so as to make it feasible to treat the wastewater by environmental compliances. The following guidelines were developed to balance the requirements of various industries and societies/housing complexes with the required infrastructure for the efficient functioning of STPs. Adhering to the above, we could help the environment be cleaner and maintain sustainable wastewater management in India.
