Overview: Solid Waste Disposal in India.
Solid waste disposal is becoming a major problem for India as around 60 million tonnes of garbage is generated in India every day. To make matters even more concerning, around 75% of the garbage, which is around 45 million tonnes, is usually disposed of in landfills without any proper treatment.
This is a concerning issue as it can lead to pollution (land, air, water) and can spread diseases, which pose a risk to public health.
Better solid waste management practices and various types of innovative solutions is the need of an hour.
What are efficient ways to minimize waste at home?
The Government and the officials are taking various measures and steps in order to dispose of solid waste properly so that it does not affect the environment. In order to protect the health of people, clean India missions like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which started in 2014 has drastically improved the Municipal Solid Waste Rules.
But as this is such a major issue and cannot only be dealt by the officials only, we as citizens should take the responsibility of managing solid wastes.
There are various ways through which we can minimize waste at home.We have always learnt about the concept of the 3R’s at our schools. This plays a major role while minimizing solid waste at our respective homes.
1: Reduce
This “R” of the 3R’s can help in the long run. When we talk about managing solid waste at home, this plays a major role as it can happen in our day-to-day activities like reducing food wastes and buying food which can lead to a lesser amount of solid wastes or leftovers.
2:Reuse
Reusable products can help in better solid waste management. Investing in reusable products can minimize waste generation and evenhelp in keeping waste away from landfills. Buying items such as reusable bags or using old clothes as a mop are various ways through which we can reuse our day-to-day items. We can use plastic bottles/items for indoor-gardening or aesthetic purposes by painting on them or else we can use them as storage containers.
3:Recycle
The process of converting waste into something useful is known as recycling and it is the most feasible technique of minimizing waste disposal at home as it can help to save the environment. It can also help human population from waste-related negative impacts.
4:Go Paperless
Papers account for 35 % of the waste that is dumped in landfills, from napkins to paper cups. Everything ends up in landfills from the trash can. To reduce paper waste, people should start using old clothes like rags for cleaning around the house, instead of paper towels from paper napkins in your kitchen.
5:Waste segregation
Different kinds of waste should be treated in different ways like using different kinds of dustbins for the different categories of waste.
Using red bins for hazardous wastes, green bins for biodegradable wastes and blue bins for dry recyclable waste can curb the pollution level.
