How do I sanitize RO system?
Once a year, a reverse osmosis system should be sanitised. While replacing the reverse osmosis water filters, it's a good idea to thoroughly sanitise your Reverse Osmosis system. Most filters should be replaced every 12 months. Sanitation procedures should be followed when changing filters and sanitising your RO water filter system. To protect your unit from contamination, follow these guidelines.
Sanitize your system with two to three tablespoons of unscented household bleach or an EPA and NSF approved sanitizer, which has been shown to kill 99.99 percent of harmful bacteria.
STEPS TO SANITIZE RO PURIFIERS
- Disconnect the RO system's cold water supply line.
- If your system is linked to a refrigerator or icemaker, disconnect the line to the icemaker.
- Turn on the RO water system's faucet and drain all of the water from the system and storage tank.
- Once the system has been emptied, ensure that the RO faucet handle is in the closed position.
-Discard all Q-series filters and the membrane. Unscrew the screw counterclockwise. There may be a small amount of water that leaks from the unit, so keep a small towel handy. After the sanitization process, discard the filters and replace them with new ones.
- Take one of the empty sanitising housing canisters and remove the yellow sanitary plugs.
- Fill the housing canister with the entire packet of Sanitizer. Alternatively, two or three tablespoons of bleach can be added to the housing canister (5.5 percent unscented bleach). Because the opening is so small, a funnel or measuring cup with a lip may come in handy.
- Reattach the housing containing the sanitising agent to the system in the pre-filter position.
- Delete the yellow sanitary plug from all remaining empty sanitising housing canisters and thread them into the system's remaining slots.
- Turn on the cold water supply line to allow the sanitising solution to fill the system.
- Look for any leaks.
- Let the system fill up with water. Depending on the water pressure, the time will vary. However, without the filters or membrane, the system should be full in 5-10 minutes.
- Turn on the RO faucet until water starts to flow out, then turn it off.
- Allow the system to set for at least 60 seconds if using Sanitizer. Allow the system to settle for at least 30 minutes if using bleach.
- After the timer goes off, flush the system by turning on the RO faucet and running water through it for 5 minutes, or until the bleach odour is gone.
- Disconnect the cold water supply line. Turn on the RO water supply. Completely drain the system. This step should be repeated twice.
- Delete the sanitization housing containers from the system after draining it completely the second time and with the cold water feed line turned off.
- Replace or reinsert all Q-series filters and the membrane.
- Check for leaks by turning on the cold water supply line.
- Enable the system several hours to refill the storage tank with the RO membrane.
CONCLUSION
The filter and housings are designed to make filter and membrane changes simple. Simply twist off the old filter and twist on the new filter. It's that easy and quick, and there's no mess.
