One of the major global consumers of freshwater used in agriculture and livestock, is the meat processing industry. Slaughterhouse wastewater (SWW), which is produced by meat processing plants (MPPs) during the slaughtering process and during facility cleaning, is quite substantial.
Due to the high presence of organics and nutrients, SWWs require extensive treatment using Effluent Treatment Plants in order to discharge to the environment, in a sustainable and safe manner. As a result, SWW treatment and disposal are essential for maintaining public health, with proper guidelines put forward by CPCB.
Characteristics of the wastewater from slaughterhouses
Due to their complex composition of lipids, proteins, fibres, high organic content, pathogens, and medications for veterinary use, meat processing effluents are regarded as detrimental on a global scale. Due to the wide variety of SWW and pollutant loading, slaughterhouse effluents are often assessed using bulk characteristics.
SWW has high levels of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD).

* The Environment (Protection) Act of 1986 requires that the emission levels from Boiler Houses of Slaughterhouses or Meat Processing Units, or both, must be in accordance with the norms outlined in notification No. G.S.R. 742 (E), dated 30.08.1990, as revised from time to time. Note: · The BOD may be lowered to 100 mg/l for slaughterhouses operating in local governments or municipalities, where the treated effluent is discharged into municipal sewers leading to full-fledged Sewage Treatment Plants. · All slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities must use appropriate technology that has been approved by SPCBs/PCCs, to ensure the safe and proper disposal of solid waste, including Type I (vegetable matter) (such as rumen, stomach and intestinal contents, dung, agriculture residues, etc.), and Type II (animal matter), which includes inedible offal, tissues, meat trimmings, waste and condemned meat, bones, etc.

Effect of wastewater from slaughterhouses on Environment
The SWW effluent has negative consequences on the environment and human health. Raw SWW discharge has a negative impact on water quality, especially since it lowers the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO), which could cause aquatic life to perish. In addition, macronutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus can result in eutrophication. These nutrients are released, which causes an excessive amount of algae growth and subsequent deterioration.
As a result of the algae's mineralization and subsequent reduction in DO levels, aquatic life may suffer. Last but not least, SWW may contain substances that are directly hazardous to aquatic life, like chromium and unionised ammonia.
Treatment of SWW or slaughterhouse wastewater
Primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments are among the SWW treatment techniques, which are similar to those applied to municipal wastewater treatment. This does not, however, negate the need for initial care.
After initial treatment, a variety of SWW treatment options exist. These options can be categorised into four primary groups: physicochemical treatment, biological treatment, AOPs, and combination processes.
