The production of coke oven effluent is linked to the production of coke at coke oven plants worldwide. The wastewater is a highly contaminated stream containing a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds, demanding substantial treatment methods before it can be reused.
Coke oven plants are technologically complex plants comprised of numerous technological sites, for coal preparation, coking, and coal by-product gathering and upgrading.
Let’s understand CPCB guidelines for coke oven industry effluent treatment plants.
Formation of coke oven wastewater
The separation of tars and ammonia from coke oven effluent is the consequence, of the processing of coke oven gas and the extraction of coal derivatives, which results in highly polluted liquor. When tars, water vapour, and other chemicals in the gas condense or are partially washed away, during the cooling stage of the coke oven gas, liquor is formed.
The liquid is first directed to the tars separation unit, where it is split into two streams: organic (tars) and aqueous. The latter phase is utilized to generate water for the gooseneck spray gear, while the remainder might be used for additional gas treatment, such as absorption to extract hydrogen sulphide. The excess liquid is sent through ammonia stripping, and the stripping column's still effluent is transferred to the coke oven wastewater treatment plant.
How is coke oven effluent treated in ETPs?
Coke oven effluents are one of many complex effluents that comprise severe pollutants, such as cyanides, thiocyanate, phenols, sulphides, and ammonia, in addition to BOD and COD.
These effluents require a highly effective and dependable treatment system, before being discharged into the environment. The primary goal of the Effluent Treatment Plant is to make the harsh coke oven effluents appropriate for disposal, to the environment while also meeting regulatory standards.

When discharged into inland surface waters, the concentration in the effluents must not exceed milligrams per liter (except for color and pH).

Biological and physicochemical Treatment in a wastewater treatment facility
The effluent treatment plant handles several trains of effluent, including contaminated streams from scrubbers, coal tar decanters, and other sources.
A rigorous and cost-effective method for treating coke effluents, is a combination of physicochemical treatment (clarification, stream stripping, and alkaline chlorination), followed by a two-stage biological treatment.
Highly complex nitrogen compounds such as cyanide and thiocyanate, as well as large quantities of ammonia, can be reduced via stage-wise treatments. Ammonia scrubber and tar separator effluents are equalized and clarified, in a tar clarifier to remove floating tar, oils, and grease, and ammonia is steam stripped in an ammonia stripper.
NOx gas plant effluents are introduced and treated in a two-stage alkaline chlorination process, to eliminate cyanide and thiocyanate, followed by sulphide oxidation with hydrogen peroxide dosing. The pH of the solution is changed by adding quenching water and the appropriate acid/alkali.
Then, a two-stage activated sludge biological treatment is employed, for biological degradation of pollutants such as BOD/COD and soluble phenols, as well as nitrification/denitrification of balanced ammonia.
