How to clean Commercial RO Plants?
A cleaning system is an essential component of a Commercial RO Plant. Membranes can become contaminated with contaminants such as colloids, biofilms, and biological debris after some period of usage. These impurities can absorb into the membrane surface and the pipes of the membrane system, reducing the system's performance. The system could possibly be severely harmed. That is why a system must be cleaned on a regular basis.
Cleaning a reverse osmosis system is typically initiated when the following conditions are met_
1: The normalized flow has decreased by 10-15%;
2: The permeates adjusted salt content has increased by 10%;
3: The pressure gradient in a pressure vessel has been reduced by 15%.
Commercial RO System cleaning
The cleaning procedure for a reverse osmosis system includes the following steps:
1. Manufacturing of the cleaning fluid
The cleaning fluids must have a specific pH, and all chemicals must be dissolved and combined before the cleaning solution is supplied to the membrane elements.Cleaning fluid is used to eliminate feed water from pressure vessels and elements.
2. Pressure vessel recirculation with low flow
The cleaning fluid is now in the drains, and the supply water has been driven out.
3. Soaking in cleaning liquid
The pump is turned off, and the washing solution is allowed to seep into the membranes.
4. Pressure vessel draining
The cleaning fluid used is flushed out of the system. The level of contamination can be determined by sampling the washing fluid and analysing the samples.
5. Cleaning the system
Permeate or high-quality water is utilized in the rinsing procedure.
6. Restarting the cleaned system components
The installation is started using the standard process settings. If cleaning fluid remains in the permeate, the system must be rinsed again until the permeate quality is adequate.
Chemical Cleaning of RO Membranes – Step-by-Step Procedure
1: Examine the cleaning tank, the hoses, and the cartridge filters. If necessary, clean the tank and flush the hoses. Replace the cartridge filters.
2: Add RO permeate to the cleaning tank. Start the agitator or recirculation pump in the tank.
3: Slowly add (your chosen RO cleaning product) to the cleaning tank based on the total volume of CIP and the product strength required, and properly mix.
4: Verify the solution's temperature. If the temperature of the solution is lower than the required level, adjust the heating control to produce the optimal temperature. Contact Netsol Water Solutions if you are not getting the procedure.
5: Determine the pH of the solution. The pH should be 12 or as the membrane manufacturer recommends. If the pH is too low, use sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or another chemical indicated by the membrane maker to raise it. Adjust the pH using hydrochloric acid (H2O: HCl) if it is too high.
6: For 30 minutes, circulate the solution through one stage at a time in the direction of the feed flow. Circulate at the appropriate flow rate specified by the membrane or system manufacturer. Pressure should be low enough to produce minimal permeate while cleaning, but never less than 60 psig.
7: In cases of substantial fouling, redirect the first return flow (up to 15% of the cleaning tank volume) to drain to avoid redeposition of removed solids. In a multistage system, each stage must be cleaned independently for best performance.
8: If the first stage cleaning solution gets turbid or discoloured, drain the tank and start over. If the pH or temperature of the solution deviates from the acceptable range, a new solution should be created.
9: Rinse the system with RO permeate before resuming service.
10: When resuming service, direct product water to the drain until all remaining cleaning solution has been flushed from the system.
