How to classify the Aeration process in ASP?
Aeration is the process of bringing water and air together to remove dissolved gases and oxidize dissolved metals such as iron, hydrogen sulphide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This process happens in the secondary treatment procedures of activated sludge treatment in wastewater treatment facilities, and is often the first significant step at a drinking water treatment facility. An aeration system with an appropriately distributed oxygen supply is critical for optimal wastewater treatment and microbiological development.
Aeration can be classified as-
1) Diffused Air Units
2) Mechanical Aeration Units
3) Combined Mechanical and diffused air units
What is Diffused air aeration?
Compressed air is blasted via diffusers in diffused air aeration. Unit’s tanks are usually in the shape of thin rectangular channels. At the bottom of the tank, there are air diffusers. The air before passing through diffusers must be passed through the air filter to remove dirt. Air compressors are used to maintain the needed pressure.
Diffuser Plate
They are formed of crystalline alumina or high silica sand and are rectangular or square in shape. Compressed air is forced through a perforated plate diffuser in this approach. The air escapes through the diffuser plate's perforations and rises in the form of bubbles. As a result, the sewage takes oxygen from the atmosphere.
Tube Diffuser
It comprises of a perforated tube hung towards the bottom of the waste water that may be removed when cleaning. Through the tube, pressurized air is dented. The air rushes out of the openings at a high velocity, agitating the sewage.
What is Mechanical aeration?
The basic goal of mechanical aeration is to expose a fresh surface of wastewater to air at regular intervals. Only 5 to 12 percent of the entire compressed air volume is used for oxidation in diffuse aeration, while the balance is used for mixing. As a result, mechanical aeration was created.
Surface aerators, either fixed or floating, can be employed for this purpose. The rectangular aeration tanks are separated into square sections, with one mixer in each square portion. When the electric motors start, the impellers suck the sewage from the centre, with or without tube support, and spray it over the surface in the form of a thin spray. When wastewater is sprayed into the air, greater surface area of the wastewater is exposed to the air, resulting in a faster rate of aeration. The aeration tank that treats sewage normally has a 5- to 8-hour retention time. The capacity of the aeration tank should be calculated in relation to the volume of returned sludge.
Mechanical aerators come in two different types. Horizontal surface aerator and vertical surface aerator are two types of surface aerators.
What are Combined Mechanical and Diffused Air Devices?
Diffused air aeration and mechanical aeration are combined in a single unit in this method. Air diffusers and mechanical aerators are both used to aerate sewage. The submerged paddles revolves in the opposite direction as the compressed air rises up from the air diffusers, and the air diffuser plates are positioned at the bottom of the tank. A motor on a horizontal shaft rotates the paddles at a speed of 10-12 rpm.
