types of filter media water treatment, types of filter media in filtration, best material for filtering water

More than 300 standards for managing water quality have been developed by the International Organization for Standardization. The ISO standards' ISO/TC 147 part describes how to sample, test, and report on the various pollutants found in water.

Analyses of the water's contaminants include biological, microbiological, radioactive, and physicochemical factors. With the main goal of protecting people and aquatic life, the regulations offer direction for the management of water pollution. There are various types of water filters used in the industrial water treatment. Let’s discuss the types of filter media utilized in industrial filtration.

What Types of filter media used in industrial water filtration?

The filter medium can be selected from one of the following options for each application.

· Sand and gravel

Materials like sand and gravel are frequently utilized in water filtering. They work well for reducing turbidity and certain suspended particles. The coarse gravel serves to distribute water evenly, and is utilized at the bottom of the filter to support the filter media.

· Activated Carbon

It is among the materials most frequently used to cleanse drinking water. This device cleans the water of organic pollutants, chlorine, and other contaminants, while also enhancing its flavour and aroma.

· Calcite

This filter material controls the acidic water's pH. The calcium carbonate dissolves when water flows through it, increasing the pH of the water in the process. Lead, copper, and other metal concentrations are also decreased by it.

· Anthracite

This medium for sediment filters provides faster flow rates in addition to garnet and sand. Additionally, it partially eliminates haze.

· Garnet

Due to its extremely hard granular nature, it is ideal for use in duplex or multimedia deep bed filters, when combined with anthracite. The main benefit of employing this material is that it is extremely resistant, to chemical erosion and abrasion.

· Zeolite

Due to its porosity, it is a filter media that can hold onto suspended materials as small as 5 microns. It can do a modest cation exchange, albeit to a lesser amount than a resin.

Due to its low density, it may be backwashed using less energy. It can be utilized in filters for a variety of industrial uses.

· AG Filter

It is great for eliminating suspended solid particles from multimedia equipment, because it is constructed of anhydrous silicon dioxide.

· Green Sand

It enables the catalysis of water polluted with iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulphide.

· Dolomite

After reverse osmosis filtration, raise the pH of the water for consumption.

· Resin for ion exchange

Resin is constructed of spheres of pure polymer that have been saturated with a cation or anion, to treat the exchange of one element for one that needs to be subtracted.

· Ion exchange resin that is anionic and cationic

Ion exchange resins are tiny polymer spheres that can exchange specific ions that are affixed, to their surfaces for ions from a solution that is passed through them. These synthetic resins have a variety of uses, including the separation of certain elements and the purification of water.

What are the requirements for the industrial water filter's quality?

Different nations have various standards for determining the reliability and security of materials, particularly under pressure. The reduction of various contaminants is often covered by multiple standards. NSF is a global organisation that assesses the equipment and material quality requirements.

What is the price of an industrial water filter?

The type and size of the filter have a significant impact on the price of industrial water filters. The equipment's layout and size directly affect the water's quality and the amount of flow, which needs to be treated.

How do you get rid of the water's excess chlorine?

One of the most prevalent pollutants in municipal and industrial treated water is chlorine. With the main goal of protecting people and aquatic life, the regulations offer direction for the management of water pollution.

Therefore, it needs to be removed or diminished to noxious or undesired levels, before the water is used. Chlorine is significantly reduced by activated carbon technology. It is an oxidant that kills germs as a pretreatment, but it can be harmful to ion exchange resins and reverse osmosis membranes in particular. Because of this, activated carbon serves a specific purpose in water treatment before a softener, demineralization system, and reverse osmosis.

How frequently should industrial water filters be changed?

The type of granular medium used, the frequency of use, and the degree of water contamination, all affect how long industrial water filters last.

While, other equipment’s using granular media beds may require replacements annually or every three to four years, a cartridge filter can last anywhere between two and six months under normal operating conditions. To prevent contaminant leakage or premature filter replacement, be sure to adhere to the manufacturer's instructions for changing each filter media.

Tanks, cartridge holders, and casings can all replace every ten to twenty years.

How should industrial water filters be maintained?

Cleaning the industrial water filter requires backwashing. Most industrial water filters can be cleaned by backwashing with water or pressured air. The frequency of the backwash is dependent on the process water's quality.

It is advised to repeat the process more regularly after at least two days for severely polluted water, such as river or underground water, although it can last up to two or three weeks for clean water.

Additionally, filters with automated backwashing valves are available. The self-cleaning mechanism is activated when the differential pressure reaches a specific level, and sends a signal to the control. By switching the direction of the filtered fluid's flow, the system flushes debris out.

When the quantity of dirt indicates a decrease in water line pressure, cartridge filters are simply swapped out for fresh ones. Plan regular inspections and add the right amount of lubricant. Verify the operation of the pressure gauges, and check the total dissolved solids on the reverse osmosis membranes.
