The effectiveness of your water softener determines how much salt you need to purchase, transport, and release into the environment. You may get a softener that never runs out of soft water and uses the least quantity of salt, by taking into account the softener's size and salt efficiency.
This translates to significant cost savings and simplicity of ownership over the water softener's lifespan.
What size of water softener do you require?
Based on your water hardness and the number of occupants in your home or other premises, choose the appropriate water softener.

To determine the right size, use the formula below:
1. Add 70 to the total number of individuals in your family (gallons of water used per day, national average).
2. To convert mg/l or ppm to grains, divide the result by 17.1 to get your water hardness in grains per gallon.
Add 5 grains for every ppm (mg/l) of iron if it is present (iron MUST be dissolved iron - it appears clear from the tap but leaves reddish-brown stains).
3. This is your daily grain intake. To determine the optimal size, divide this quantity by each of the softening capacities.
Note: With the computer-control valve, the capacity can be programmed to be reduced in order to make better use of the salt. For instance, a one cubic foot softener with a salt setting of 18.5 pounds per regeneration, has a maximum capacity of 32,000 grains. As a result, there are 1729 softening grains in every pound of salt (32,000/18.5).
This can be programmed to hold 24,000 grains at a salt setting of 8.5 pounds. As a result, the efficiency would be increased to 2823 grains per pound of salt, almost tripling it. In order to help you decide, the following capacity options list both the peak and the efficient levels.
· 1 cubic foot of resin with a peak of 32,000 grains and an efficiency of 24,000;
· 1.5 cubic feet of resin, 48,000 peak grains, and 32,000 effective grains;
· 2.0 cubic feet of resin, peak grain count of 64,000, and efficiency of 40,000;
Conclusion
To choose the right water softener, it is essential to understand your water and usage. If your water softener is too tiny, it won't be able to keep up with your demands and will deteriorate more quickly. High grain water softeners are more expensive, and a softener that is too big wastes money.
