tertiary treatment of wastewater, industrial wastewater treatment process, methods of tertiary treatment of wastewater

Introduction

Tertiary RO wastewater recycling has emerged as a viable alternative for supplementing water supply, in order to combat global water scarcity. RO desalination in tertiary wastewater operations has shown to be a cost-effective option, for municipalities and industrial entities to reuse water.

In this article, we will discuss some pros and cons of Industrial RO Plants for wastewater recycling.

Reduction of pollutants through Industrial RO Systems in the tertiary stage

Tertiary RO wastewater recycling with suitable pre-treatment, in the primary and secondary phases, reduces total dissolved solids, trace heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, and other dissolved pollutants.

Pre-treatment methods such as electrocoagulation, bio-organic flocculants, innovative low fouling membrane chemistries, correctly selected antiscalant chemicals, and disinfection, have been shown to be crucial in preventing membrane scaling and fouling. These procedures allow for the optimization of membrane recovery rates, and membrane flux rates, resulting in a cost-effective process that produces high-quality effluent water.

What is procedure of tertiary RO wastewater recycling in industries?

If you're familiar with the osmosis process, you'll know that when a system is split by a water permeable membrane, water will naturally flow from the side with a low concentration of solids, to the side with a larger concentration. This provides the system back into balance.

To get rid of the wastewater toxins, we? wish to do the reverse. As a result, we employ a different osmosis mechanism: Pressure!

Water will flow from a high-pressure area to a low-pressure area when separated by a semi-permeable membrane, regardless of the concentration on any side. So, if we pump our secondary treated wastewater onto one side of a membrane and pressurize it, the water will flow through the membrane to the opposite side, leaving all of the trace impurities behind.

Advantages of using Industrial RO Plants for the tertiary treatment of wastewater

•      Elimination of high TDS

Due to the obvious selectivity of these low fouling membranes for pollutant removal, tertiary RO wastewater recycling is one of the most effective techniques of TDS reduction.

•      Modular

The compact, modular solutions are suited for use in communities and industrial settings. These systems are often simple to integrate into current treatment system procedures, or new installations. Additional modular systems can increase treatment capacity.

•      Heavy metals are reduced

Other trace dissolved pollutants, including TDS, can be considerably decreased, by utilizing a tertiary RO wastewater recycling system.

Limitations of using Industrial RO Plants for the tertiary treatment of wastewater

•      Extensive pre-treatment is required

Under the correct conditions, reverse osmosis is a successful tertiary treatment. If sufficient pre-treatment is not provided in prior wastewater treatment procedures, the membrane can become blocked with particles or scaled with precipitates.

Treatment systems that use RO wastewater recycling as a tertiary step, typically have adequate earlier treatment steps to manage any foulants, before they reach the RO treatment system. If the membrane becomes clogged or scaled, the treatment flow rate and water quality suffer.

•      High power consumption

The constant flow and constant pressure of the system can draw a reasonable amount of power. There is, however, a significant way to alleviate this. Using pressure exchanger technology, it is possible to recycle the pressure that develops in the system, and use it to pressurize the influent water. This reduces the required net power.

•      Membrane preservation

In order to enhance efficiency, the membrane must be carefully maintained in addition to pre-treatment. However, if pre-treatments are successful and a potential membrane cleaning cycle is introduced, maintenance can be decreased. This also increases the membrane's lifetime, requiring it to be replaced less regularly.

Conclusion

By understanding the pros and cons, we can conclude that these advanced treatment systems, provide both industrial organizations and municipalities looking for a sustainable solution, to augment their water supply in these clean water-challenged areas.
