What is Desalination technology?
Desalination technology has been around for hundreds of years. People have traditionally evaporated brackish groundwater or seawater, then condensed the vapor to produce salt-free water for drinking or, in some situations, agricultural irrigation in the Middle East.
The procedure has become increasingly sophisticated over time. The majority of current desalination plants use reverse osmosis, which involves pumping high-pressure water through semi-permeable membranes that eliminate salt and other minerals. The RO method accounts for 80% of the world's desalination capacity. Apparently, there is a tremendous increase in the deployment of the RO process in saltwater desalination due to its great effectiveness in removing salts while consuming less energy than thermal desalination systems such as MSF and MED.
Standard desalination rate vs actual desalination rate vs system desalination rate of reverse osmosis membrane elements
1: Standard desalination Rate: The reverse osmosis membrane element's standard desalination rate is the rate of desalination measured by the membrane element manufacturer under standard circumstances.
2: Actual Desalination Rate:The membrane element's real desalination rate is the rate of desalination indicated by the membrane element in actual use.In certain circumstances, the real desalination rate is higher than the conventional desalination rate, but in many others, it is lower. This is due to the fact that the conventional test circumstances and real use conditions are diametrically opposed. Because of the varying ionic components in water, temperature, average water flux selection value, system recovery rate, and so on, deviate from normal test circumstances, and these aspects will impact the membrane element's desalination rate.
3: System Desalination Rate:The desalination rate displayed by the complete reverse osmosis unit is the system desalination rate. Furthermore, because the usage conditions deviate from the normal conditions, the system desalination rate differs from the standard desalination rate. Simultaneously, because the real usage circumstances of each membrane element vary, the system desalination rate differs from the membrane element's actual desalination rate. The system desalination rate for a device with only one membrane element is equal to the membrane element's actual desalination rate.
The simplest approach to forecast the desalination rate of the system is to use the mathematical software provided by the membrane element manufacturer.
Conclusion
When designing the reverse osmosis device, providing users with system performance guarantees, accepting the reverse osmosis device, or evaluating the performance of the membrane element, must be based on the actual system desalination rate after understanding the relationship between the standard desalination rate, actual desalination rate, and system desalination rate of the membrane elements. The usual desalination rate of membrane elements cannot be used for desalination.
