What is biodiversity in the environment? Why is it important?

Biodiversity has been a critical indicator in maintaining the health of an ecosystem. This is because when organisms interact with each other and build relationships, they essentially are involved in maintaining the balance on our Earth. For example, suppose certain species are affected by the climate. In that case, the other species may still adapt and help the ecosystem maintain life on Earth. Concept of biodiversity

Walter Rosen first coined the term biodiversity in 1985. It is one of the most important terms used to describe the variety of life forms on Earth. Life forms include all the Earth species such as plants, animals, birds, human beings, etc. Not only this, the different ecosystems and the genes in a single species are also included in biodiversity.

These all are essential to maintain life, health, and resilience in nature. The more biodiversity there is, the more secure life is. It is also believed that biodiversity is the foundation of Earth. All the living beings that live on this planet are interconnected and interdependent. They are involved in building complex and interconnected relationships that are known as ecosystems.

Some humans have encountered various respiratory health problems like asthma, influenza, etc. If there had been enough trees, there would have been less pollution. If you had used CNG fuels, there would be less pollution in the environment. All the organisms living on this planet would have lived a life of happiness and at least one of peace.

As one of the species of this planet, Earth, we have only demanded from nature and the ecosystem, but we have rarely made any efforts to give back to them. Suppose how you would feel if someone had exploited you in such a manner? How would you feel if someone had just cruelly treated you as you are now doing with our biodiversity? Importance of Biodiversity

Biodiversity has multiple benefits. The importance can essentially be divided into three types. Three types are described here as follows:

• 1. Economic benefits: include food, air, water, agriculture, industry, and medicines. We derive our sustenance from plants and animals, water from the water bodies or groundwater, air from trees, treatments from various medicinal plants, etc.
• 2. Ecological benefits: The ecological benefits include the protection and management of soil and forests, conservation and purification of water, maintenance of hydrological cycle, etc.
• 3. Ethical benefits: The moral benefits include the interconnected relationship with the various varieties of forms of biodiversity. People relate cultural and spiritual feelings with lands, trees, and animals. For example, the tree peepal is considered to be holy, and people worship it. Similarly, the sacred river Ganga is adored by millions of people.
