One of the best things you can do to make sure, you are keeping as much of your company's waste out of landfills as you can, while preventing contamination through appropriate separation, is to find out what may be recycled in your region.
In order to improve the operations of your neighborhood, make sure that materials that cannot be recycled, such as plastic bags and film and electronic waste, are taken to the proper location to be recycled. It is crucial to know what can be recycled in your city.
What is recyclable in one place could be waste in another!
What are the wastes that we can recycle?
After gaining a fundamental grasp of what can and cannot be recycled, it is time to examine what qualifies an item as recyclable.
If your city accepts a certain material for collection and sorting, then three conditions must be met for an item, to be considered recyclable there:
· For the material to be recycled, technology is required.
· Buyer is required.
· The processor's economics must be favorable.
Technology must exist to recycle the material
As obvious as it may sound, one of the first questions to address when determining what may be recycled is whether or not, it is technologically possible to convert the material (or materials), from which the product is manufactured into a raw material that can be used once more, in the manufacturing process.
It is more important to consider whether these materials can be treated at all, than if your neighborhood Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) can handle them. Consider upcycling if the technology to recycle a certain material is not yet available.
There must be a buyer for the waste item
The fact that recycling is a business is often overlooked. The common response to the question of whether a certain object can be recycled is that, practically everything can be recycled, provided there is a market for it.
The end-user must be situated reasonably close to the materials because if they are too far away, the cost of obtaining the materials will probably be prohibitive, and there is a good chance that the business seeking to make the purchase, will be able to obtain the same kind of raw material from somewhere nearby.
This last aspect is crucial when it comes to obtaining recycled materials, through a sustainable supply chain since, while acquiring recycled materials to create new goods is unquestionably a sustainable enterprise.
The economics must work for the processor
It's crucial to remember that there is a critical mass threshold that MRFs must meet, in order for them to profitably recover a certain material, when we're thinking about what may be recycled.
What can’t be recycled?
Finding out what cannot be recycled is just as essential as knowing, what can be recycled in your region of the world.
Here is an overview of the items that can’t be recycled:
· Greasy paper, such as pizza boxes and paper plates with oil on them.
· Used tissues, paper towels, and diapers.
· Broken mirrors, lights, and pottery.
· Plastic film products including plastic bags, bubble wrap, and shrink wrap.
· Expanded polystyrene Styrofoam (EPS).
· Electronic garbage (e-waste).
· Debris from construction and demolition (C&D), such as drywall and concrete.
What can be recycled?
Through your recycling programme, a variety of products may be recycled. These include materials that are evident, like paper and glass, as well as less obvious ones, including the
· Majority of metals and even food.
· Newspapers, periodicals, and other types of paper.
· Cardboard (OCC).
· Glass jars and bottles.
· Stiff plastic goods
· Tin, steel, and aluminum cans.
Conclusion
As usual, the laws your city or municipality has set in place and whether or not they take part in any outside programmes, like a food waste recycling collection and processing programme, will determine what can and cannot be recycled where you live or work.
