What are the valuable uses of Wastewater Sludge?

Sludge from wastewater is made up of both inorganic and organic materials, as well as high concentrations of some plant nutrients and much lower concentrations of numerous trace elements and organic chemicals, as well as pathogens. Sludge is digested anaerobically and dehydrated, accounting for 1% of the wastewater entering the treatment plant. After mechanical drying, sewage sludge contains approximately 80% moisture and 20% dry matter at the outlet.

The compositions of wastewater sludge vary greatly depending on the composition of the wastewater and the treatment processes used.Every one of us contributes to the annual production of 70-100kg of dewatered sewage sludge, which equates to 20-25kg of dry solids.

Recovery and reuse of wastewater sludge

A: Recovery of sludge components

The two components in sewage sludge that are technically and economically feasible to recycle are nutrients {primarily nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (N)) and energy (carbon)}. Because sewage sludge contains organic matter, energy can be recovered during the treatment process. Sewage sludge contains a significant amount of nutrients, particularly P and N.

Phosphorus recovery: Due to depleting sources, P is quickly becoming the most important nutrient.There is an increasing interest in developing and implementing technologies to recover phosphorus from secondary/waste materials such as sewage sludge and thus replace virgin raw phosphorus. There are various technical solutions for phosphorus recycling from wastewater. Phosphorus can be recovered from various stages of wastewater or sludge treatment.Struvite crystallization is the most commonly used method for recovering phosphorus from wastewater or sludge.

Nitrogen recovery: Nitrogen is another important nutrient that is being recovered from sewage sludge. After anaerobic digestion (AD), lime conditioning, and filter pressing stages, a significant fraction (12-15 percent) of the total nitrogen load entering the wastewater treatment plant is recovered from the sludge via ammonia stripping and subsequent capturing (scrubbing) of the ammonia gas (NH3) with a concentrated nitric acid solution. This stripping and scrubbing procedure produces an industrially reusable ammonium nitrate (AN – NH4NO3) by-product.

Energy recovery: Sludge energy recovery generally entails converting the sludge into biogas, syngas, and bio-oil, which can then be converted into electricity, mechanical energy, and heat.

B: Reuse of wastewater sludge

The growing volume of sludge generated by wastewater treatment, in line with population growth and urban sprawl, is a major source of concern for local governments and operators. Sludge treatment has become necessary in order to reduce volume and transform it into recoverable products.To improve costs and disposal options, a variety of processes are required to remove potential health risks, remove water, and reduce the volume and weight of sludge.

With the proper treatment, sewage sludge can be converted from a waste into a valuable resource and product known as bio-solids or bio-resources. Bio-solids are produced after wastewater is cleaned and solids are removed using physical, chemical, and biological processes. Bio-solids can be used as an alternative to synthetic fertilizers to improve soil quality and fertility while also stimulating plant growth.In addition to the potential for agricultural fertilizer production, industrial and municipal sludge can be used to generate biogas for power generation. Before being applied to land, bio-solids must meet strict regulation and quality standards, depending on the country.
